Sitting in Starbucks awhile ago, Jack Johnson‘s cute little ditty “Banana Pancakes” came over the sound system. “Pretend like it’s the weekend now,” I sang to myself, thinking, This song is significant. Why is this song significant? Then I remembered: my friend Tania picked “Banana Pancakes” as her first dance song when she married her now-husband Mark this summer. At the time, I thought “Banana Pancakes” wasn’t particularly romantic, but hearing it again, I think it’s sweet.
I never made it down the aisle with my dude, but I had my #1 draft pick for our first dance song all picked out: KT Tunstall‘s “Universe & U.” Most. Romantic. Song. Ever. A few years ago an ex-boyfriend and I lit candles and danced to that song in his bedroom and that memory remains one of the most treasured of my life. The lyrics perfectly describe how I want to feel about the person with whom I’ll spend the rest of my — whoever he may turn out to be.
Turns out I’m not the only girl whose picked a song for the first dance: Amelia (who was once engaged) rather specifically knew, “I wanted to walk down the aisle to ‘You’re My Best Friend’ by Queen and my first dance to be ‘Into The Mystic’ by Van Morrison. And I still want to, if I decide to get married, that is.” Any other single ladies and gents out there who already know the song you want as your first dance? And married gals/guys, tell us what song you and your boo danced to!
