The Roulette layout

Fortunately, the game of Roulette is a simple one, so it won’t take too much time to pick up! It’s great for beginners as the table itself has only two elements to focus on – the betting board and the wheel.

The felt betting board is made up of the bets you can make, and is also where you place your betting chips – simple!

However, the wheel may have variations, depending on which version you’re playing. The European wheel is the most common version, where it is split into 37 pockets and a single zero. This is the favourite wheel for many, as there are better succession rates, with a house edge of 2.30%.

The next thing to pick up on is the different colours you’ll see. Each number on the wheel is coloured either black or red, and zero is the only green number.

Once the wheel is spun by the croupier, it will spin a tiny white ball that determines the result of each game of Roulette.

What are the other versions of Roulette?

American

The American version of Roulette may be the only version you can play if you’re heading to the US, so it may be handy to know.

The difference between the European and American version is that the wheel has 38 pockets – the extra pocket is the double zero. This gives American Roulette a higher house edge, at 5.26%, so there are less chances of you walking away with success.

French

It’s not all bad news, as there’s an even better form of Roulette to play that has a house edge of 1.35%. This is known as French Roulette.

Its layout is the same as European Roulette, but has a slightly different layout and added rules.

There’s a ‘la partage’ rule where if you make an outside bet and the ball lands on zero, you get half of your bet back. In the European and American version, you would lose all of your stake in the same situation.

The French variation has higher chances to succeed, but it may be harder to find, especially if you’re not particularly a high roller. But if you can find a French Roulette table that is suitable for you, why not give it a go?

How to play Roulette

Now that the layout of Roulette has been explained, it’s time for the actual gameplay.

Before you start a game, you’ll need to place your bets – the more wagers you place, the more chances you have of succeeding. You’ll also be playing with chips, so you’ll need to exchange your own funds for these.

But, what do you actually bet on?

There are two types of bets, known as inside and outside bets. Inside bets are placed in the inner part of the Roulette table and give better payouts, but chances of gaining a prize are low. An example would be a ‘straight up’ bet, where you wager on a single number. If the ball lands on it, the prize is yours!

With outside bets, they’re placed on the outside of the Roulette table. They have lower payouts, but you’ll have better chances when betting on these. An example would be to bet on whether the ball lands on a black or red colour.

There are many other ways to bet, so there are more possible chances for you to succeed. You’ll find this out once you become more familiar with the actual gameplay!

What’s next?

So, now that you have the basic gameplay elements to help you get started, you may be thinking of the next steps, like where you can access this classic casino game.

There are a variety of ways to play Roulette – either at a land-based or online venue. But, where’s the best starting point?

For a beginner, playing Roulette online may be the best option for you, as you can play in the comfort of your home, without the hustle and bustle of a land-based casino. This may help you become more confident at the game, before you decide to head to your local venue.

There are more options when it comes to Roulette variations online, so you may be able to find a game that best suits your needs and playing habits.

At both types of venues (thanks to online live Roulette), you’ll have the opportunity to ask for help from the dealer. You can also keep up the social aspect by interacting with other players. You’ll meet new people in person, but you can also interact with the live chat feature online.

It’s great that both venues are becoming increasingly similar, so you can experience the best time at both venues, with little difference.

But with possibilities to browse at your own time, and a slower introduction into Roulette, select your chosen provider to have the best online gaming experience!

Who knows what the future of Roulette will hold? Online casino gaming is constantly evolving, especially with the creation of VR gaming, where you can further simulate a real-life Roulette table. Now you’ve got the basics, you can try any Roulette variation, so where will you begin?

And, with the game of Roulette being such a favourite for many, you’ll soon find out why when you begin to play!
