The wish and the need to look our best in every situation is one of the traits that makes us human. Caring about the way we present ourselves to the world is important for more than one reason. It is formal and expected as a part of the general etiquette in most scenarios, but it also helps individuals feel more comfortable and more importantly, confident. When there is something we dislike about ourselves it is easy to feel self-conscious. This is almost always challenging do deal with because it is difficult to change something about one’s look, at least in natural ways. If hair is the thing that is causing you troubles and preventing you from feeling better about yourself, there is a rather common and familiar solution and a product that all of us know.

Wigs Throughout History

That would of course be the wig, an invention that has a much longer history than people think. Wigs have been around for thousands of years and they have served many functions, not all of which were related to hair loss or bald spots. That is their modern function, as well as being fashion pieces. But back in the day, they were used as status symbols and a way to distinguish between social classes or titles. In the article ahead we focus on the contemporary times of course and talk about which wig colors look best on lighter skin tones. This is not really a rule, more of a guideline for those looking to buy a new wig that is said to match well with light skin. Read on to learn more about this if you have problems picking out the best color for your skin tone.

Guidelines for Matching the Two

Instead of talking about what colors go with what skin tones, we are first going to tell you what you need to do in order to match wig colors and skin tones in general. In nature, certain combinations are always more likely to happen. People with lighter skin are more likely to have blonde and light brown hair, but there are always exceptions. Darker skins, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and African alike, usually equal dark brown and black hair. But with wigs that does not have to be the case. The best thing about them is that you are free to pick whichever color you want as long as you like it and feel good about it. You can always go for the most natural look if you do not want others to know you are wearing a wig, or go whichever other route you want if you could care less what others think. In the following paragraph we talk about what colors go with what tones.

Warm and Darker Tones

Those with warmer skin tones have a lot of options, but most of them are in the brown spectrum. Usually, wig wearers of warm skin tones opt for chocolate, dark mocha, warm brown, chestnut, cinnamon, honey, and amber wigs. When it comes to colors warm skin tones should avoid, they include cool colors like jet black, blues, violet, and platinum blonde. They do not compliment the complexion of warm skin that well, but there are still people who like the combination. The reason they do not work more often than they do is the washed out look, something you definitely want to escape.

Darker skin is the best for brown, red, and blonde wigs. For the most natural look with brown wigs, it is best to either go two shades lighter or two shades darker than your natural hair. In terms of brown wig tones, the ones that work best include golden, chocolate, honey, caramel, red, and coffee. There is a lot of range here so you will probably find the best one for your own preferences and your own skin tone.

In terms of reds, dep reds like burgundy and copper go amazingly well with darker skin. The best all-over color you can choose would be auburn, a beautiful deep dark red. On the other hand, highlighted looks work best with bolder red shades, ombre styles, and blends with either black or brown undertones. This approach further enhances the natural warmth of darker skin tones. For some real warmth, orange ginger wigs are a real treat for darker skin. The blonde varieties for darker skin can work beautifully well, but they can never look as natural as darker colors. Avoid ashy blondes and try to find ones that are more orange than yellow in their undertone. Gold is your friend again, especially if you want to offset some darker blondes a bit.

Cooler and Lighter Tones

If you have lighter skin, everything that does not work as well or look as natural for darker skin works for you. This means blacks, ashy brown, cool blondes, honey, beige, greys, and auburn wig colors. They will all neutralize the light tone of your skin instead of washing you out like warmer colors would.

Blonde is usually the preferred wig for people of lighter skin tones simply because there are so many different shades of blonde that can work. From platinum blonde to icy and silver variants, it can all look magnificent and natural. Even golden and darker blondes are perfect for lighter skin particularly in summertime when you aim for more warmth in your look.

Blacks and browns are also good for light skin and every wig wearer of fair skin should have one of these. The richer the tone, the better. If you think there are not many undertones to go around, worry not and aim for something orange. Warmer chocolate or coffee highlights are great for offsetting an all-brown wig, and you can always go the ombre way and have multiple shades of ashy or med browns. Going completely jet black with your wig on a dark skin does wonders too, a look that is definitely both intimidating and beautiful at the same time.

Lastly, if you are feeling like making statements and going for something bold and unique, lighter skin allows it in the form of bright and wacky wig colors that can still look somewhat natural. We are talking light shades of pink, blue, and anything else that is bright and fun. Experimenting is fun when you have wigs because it is not your hair. There is nothing to ruin really. Ombre and balayage options galore!
