Indiana Representative Jud McMillin, a rising star in the Republican party, has resigned after accidentally sending a video of himself having sex with a woman who was not his wife to his entire contacts list! Awkward.
After the video was sent, McMillan texted all recipients back with a message stating: “My phone was stolen in Canada and out of my control for about 24 hours. I have just been able to reactivate it under my control. Please disregard any messages you received recently. I am truly sorry for anything offensive you may have received.”
Yeah, sure dude. Blame the Canadians! When in doubt, always blame the Canadians.
Upon his resignation, McMillan did not acknowledge the sext, but told reporters from the Indianapolis Star that he’d “decided the time is right for me to pass the torch and spend more time with my family.” Right. Because I’m sure his wife is dying to spend some quality time with him right now.
On Wednesday, he posted the following message to Facebook:
“I make mistakes. When I do, regardless of how big or small they are, I do my best to admit them, own up to it, and then start doing my best to remedy them. That’s what I am doing right now with my family. With that being said I will never understand the need for some people to spew hatred. I hope it makes those people feel better about themselves because there is no other discernable [sic] benefit. What a sad place for society to be. On the other hand, I am constantly amazed at how good hearted so many people are. The outpouring of support I have received from so many gives me faith and hope in humanity as a whole. To those who choose this path, I encourage you to maintain your approach not only towards those you agree with and like, but towards those you disagree with as well. This is the only approach that can possibly help make the world a better place.”
And that is pretty interesting, because guess what? Dude actually has a pretty vested interest in hatred! In fact, he was a co-sponsor of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act which allows people who hate gay people (for Jesus reasons) to legally discriminate against them!
He also claimed on his site that he was ready to fight for “traditional marriage,” stating:
“I will protect the integrity of the institution of marriage. In southeastern Indiana the family has always been the foundation of our strength of community. Our relationships with our wives, husbands, parents, children, siblings and other loved ones provides the glue that binds our common purpose. In these times of turmoil the rest of the country could learn something from our example.”
Now, contrary to what McMillan is thinking, this isn’t about hate. It’s about schadenfreude–and yes, we get to have it. If you’re going to go around whimsically trying to restrict the rights of others, and swear up and down that it’s because you just loooooooooove family so very much–and then you accidentally send everyone on your contacts list a video of you boning a woman who is not your wife?? Then yeah, all the people whose rights you’ve worked to restrict, and all the people who care about them get to have a big ol’ laugh at very holy you.
Just like they did with Josh Duggar, Christian Vlogger Guy, and the slew of others that came before them.
That’s how it works, OK? If you go around being all Captain Family Values and whining about gay people, then you do not have the privilege of having an affair and expecting no one to call you a hypocrite. If you don’t like that, then you can just keep it in your pants. Or hey, screw around and at least have the damned decency to keep your mouth shut about what other people do. Your choice!
