Just like any other product or material under the sun, sheet metal can come in a variety of grades, textures, colors, and thickness. All of these factors play a crucial role in deciding which sheet metal to use for your next artwork.

There are a lot of options for sheets that can be used in artwork and aluminum is preferred for the more modern type of artwork. Apart from aluminum sheets, copper, stainless steel, bronze, brass, and other metal materials can be used for your next artwork. Make sure to make your decision accordingly to the type or genre of the artwork, and pick your sheets according to that.

Namely, one can use copper and bronze for more traditional or classical metal art. Others might use aluminum for a more modern artwork, and some might use rusted, or patina-ed sheet metal for a more western or rustic artwork.

Will different types of metal produce high-quality artwork?

Each type of metal has its own levels of quality which should always factor in depending on the type of artwork. A lot of types of metal have various types of grades, such as aluminum which has a pop can grade, industrial grade, aerospace grade, and automotive grade. On the other hand, steel sheets can be found in mild steel, cold-roll steel, and stainless steel form. It is safe to say that metal art can be created from any metal under the sun, you just have to find the right one for your next project.

1.    Iron Metal Art

Iron has been used through human history for hand tools, cooking pots, weapons, garden sculptures, boats, and any other functional item.

There are a lot of different types of iron which you can use, but the ones used for making artwork are made using one of these three:

  • Cast Iron: Cannot be stretched or bent, and it has enough amount of carbon in it which gives quality
  • Steel: Steel possesses characteristics from both wrought and cast iron, it has finer grade, and it is lighter if exposed to high temperatures
  • Stainless Steel: Alloying chromium with steel will help prevent the metal art from rusting, and stainless steel happens to be alloyed with up to 20% of chromium
  • Wrought Iron: Generally softer in nature, wrought iron is easily rolled into plates, hammered into bars, and drawn into wires.

3.    Copper Metal Art

Just as silver, gold and tin, copper is a metal found in its pure state, in terms of its use. Copper has been widely used as a form of metal art through history. Copper artwork can be found in every household, and it can be used for both industrial and decorative metal arts.

This is because copper can be bent and molded very easily into any desired shape, making it the main player in metal artworks.

4.    Bronze Metal Art

Bronze is the first metal alloy to be created by our ancient ancestors, and bronze is harder than iron. Bronze has been the most popular metal for metal sculptures and statues, as well as used by the Romans as weapons.

Bronze is very strong and durable and can be cast with ease in a great variety of colors, shapes, and styles, making it one of the most desired metals for metal arts.
