If You Like Documentaries About Weird Cults, You Need To Watch Children Of The Stars STAT

This Friday, after reading this glorious article on Raw Story about how the tea company Celestial Seasonings originated from a cult in the ’70s, I found myself in a bit of a cult research internet hole, which last a good amount of the long weekend. This is not unusual for me, as I am actually kind of obsessed with researching cults to begin with. Which may or may not stem from the time I, personally, was rejected by a weird sex cult as a teenager.

Anyway! One of my favorite cults of all time is the Unarius Academy of Science–a UFO religion best known for their public access shows and their deceased leader Uriel’s unimpeachable fashion sense. The group’s primary beliefs are that they’ve all lived multiple lives–often together–on other planets, that all sci-fi movies are real remembrances of past lives, and that at some point 32 spaceships are going to land in California and establish a university of some kind.

This weekend, I discovered that there is an entire documentary on them available on Hulu, called Children of the Stars–and holy crap, it is the best thing ever. I think it just replaced Grey Gardens as my favorite documentary of all time.

The documentary was made in 2012, but this is the first I’ve heard of it, and even though it’s old I feel the need to spread the word about how glorious it is. I mean, as you can see in the clip above, there’s a guy who says “It just dawned on me–I said, ‘Wow, this is an archangel, and she’s telling me I should have some custard’.” What more could you ask for?
