On a day where we remember heroes, it’s also important to remember that they come in all forms. Bretagne, who was a part of the search and rescue efforts at ground zero with her handler Denise Corliss, is one of them. She served as a member of the Texas Task Force 1 and is the last known surviving rescue dog from 9/11.
After hearing Bretagne’s compelling story, BarkPost also learned that she had a 16th birthday coming up. That combination culminated in making her birthday the ultimate event as a part of their Dog’s Best Day series. Talk about a sweet 16.
Bretagne and Corliss were brought to New York for a dream birthday. This time around the concrete jungle was filled burgers, cab rides and trips to the park, all things that would make any day a great day to be a dog. But the real present came when a $1,000 donation was made in Bretagne’s name, to keep training dogs like her.
And if there’s anything we all need on a emotional day of remembrance like today, it’s more dogs like this. Happy Birthday, Bretagne! We hope everyday is full of cake from here on out.
