Gaten Matarazzo plays the role of Dustin on Netflix original Stranger Things. Known for his loveable character, Gaten introduced his real-life condition in the first season of the series. “I told you a million times; my teeth are coming in. It’s called cleidocranial dysplasia.” – Dustin Henderson explains his being toothless.
While his character is fighting against school bullies and the creatures of the Upside Down, Gaten has his own monsters to battle – growing up with CCD and the complications that come with it. Due to his condition, Gaten has used his platform to become an advocate for a rare genetic condition called Cleidocranial Dysplasia.
What Is Cleidocranial Dysplasia?
In simple terms, Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD) is a rare genetic congenital disability that affects the development of the teeth, cranial, or clavicle bones. It commonly affects the collarbones; the bones are poorly developed or non-existent, bringing the shoulders closer together.
In Gaten’s case, at the beginning of the show, he still had most of his baby teeth. On-screen and off-screen, he was able to raise awareness and has even become a vocal spokesperson for those who suffer from the same condition as him.
Why It’s A Big Deal
Treating this condition is considered a cosmetic procedure, but that is not always the case for those who experience it. The young actor had a difficult time finding professionals who knew how to treat his condition. At 16 years old, he recounts his struggles with dealing with CCD and the invasive procedures that come with it.
As if that weren’t enough, the treatment needed for CCD is strictly considered cosmetic, despite the fact that it affects a person’s entire life. Cosmetic procedures, as you may know, are not often covered by insurance, which makes treatment less accessible to those who need it.
Raising Awareness
Due to the popularity of the show, clinics like the Antoine Dental Center and others in the dental community are raising awareness. Matarazzo is taking the opportunity to reach out to others and attempt to remove the stigma of cosmetic dental procedures.
Gaten states, “Teeth affect livelihood. They affect the way you eat, the way you breathe, the way you speak.” This inspirational young actor hopes to educate his fanbase and others about the difficulties of CCD. “I think that it’s important to just let your voice be heard.”
Dustin’s Future
The creators of the show Stranger Things have been creative enough to adjust the character and script according to Matatazzo’s condition. From the beginning, he has been able to play his role with missing teeth and a lisp, with prosthodontics, and by the latest season, he is back to acting with the condition at full display.
As of now, there are no hints of what is to come for the actor or the character he plays, but his presence has surpassed beyond the purpose of entertainment. We are excited to see what the future holds for one of our favorite young heroes.
