When you need a job, you need it fast. No one likes sending dozens of applications and going on dozens of interviews. Maybe you’ve been unemployed for a while, maybe you want to leave behind the toxic environment at your current job. Whatever the reason, finding the new job quickly and painlessly is want everyone wants. That’s why the job market is super competitive, and it will probably stay that way. Most of the time it just looks like that a process of finding a job is an endless loop of going to interviews and sending online applications. So, we prepared some tips on how to score a new job as fast as possible.
The number one tip is to stand out. You don’t do this by simply meeting the criteria that the employer is looking for. You have to really sell yourself, explain what you can bring to the workplace that could be useful, that is, why they should pick you over other applicants. One cover letter doesn’t cover all the applications. Take some time to truly explain in each cover letter why that place is the one you want to work at.
If there is a specific company that you want to send your resume to, you need to do some research and prepare. You start by simply googling and checking if they’re hiring. If, for example, you wish to send an application to Lowe’s, you can start with searching “lowe’s jobs near me” and see if there are any results. Often, you will see their call for application and see what is it what they offer to you as a new employee. For instance, they’ll explain that there’s a productive and positive work environment, that they care about diversity or that they will enable you to go to some training courses. This is a great way to find a place you want to apply for and see what it is you can get from that workplace.
Tell everyone that you’re job hunting. No one can help you find a job if they don’t know you’re looking for one. You never know who is hiring and who knows someone who is hiring.
Also, talk to someone you know works in a company where you wish to apply or ask people if they know someone who works there. Maybe they will even give you some tips on how to score that job! The chances are good you’ll run into someone who can help. In case your best friend of a family member is the one you’re asking for a favor you can be direct and upfront, while you might want to be a bit more subtle in case it’s someone you don’t know that well.
If you manage to get introduced to a company or a hiring manager, you will raise your chances of getting hired.
Don’t be afraid to send your CV and cover letter to companies that are not hiring. There’s a possibility they will like your application and contact you, and you’ll have virtually no competition.
If you need a job right now and don’t have time to do the research, simply try to get your resume to reach as many companies as possible. LinkedIn is a good place to do just that.
