Vape Coil Types: A Comprehensive Guide to Different Vape Coils

Vaping is a global phenomenon, and millions of people use it to treat various bodily ailments and anxiety disorders. But if you are new to the world of vaping, it is pretty easy to get lost in jargon and technical terms, so here we are today with a comprehensive guide. But before we indulge into the types of vape coils we should learn more about vape coils in general and how different variations of them affect the vaping aroma, smoke quality and overall experience.

What is a Vape Coil?

A vape coil is an essential part of your vaping device. This coil is required to heat up the e-liquid and then convert it into vapors. The resistance of this coil can be adjusted according to the number and type of wraps of a wire the respective coil has. A convection vaporiser is however different from a traditional vaporiser both in terms of vape coil used and type of aroma.

The vape coil resistance is measured with the help of an Ohmmeter. So if you want a warmer vapor and more significant clouds, you should use a low resistance coil, and if you need a cooler vape with less current, then you should use a high resistance coil. So, in essence, the coil’s resistance determines what type of e-liquid aroma you will get. The vape coil is made from a coiled wire or a piece of mesh and some wicking materials. However, a vape coil doesn’t need to be made precisely using these materials. Hence the construction of vaping coils varies according to manufacturers.

How Many Different Vape Coils Are There?

  1. Ceramic Coil: A ceramic coil material is porous, meaning air passes through it, and hence it offers a super smooth draw. If you search for ceramic coil vaping coils in online forums, you will see many experienced vapor users say that ceramic material brings out the best of the e-liquid flavor than other materials. Also, the ceramic vaping coils can tolerate higher wattages and last longer than cotton coils too. So overall, you will get mostly an excellent vaping experience with minimal dry hits. Although ceramic vaping coils are sturdy and strong enough, you have to be careful about handling it. As they can break just about as easily as glass vape coils. So you have to treat them with some degree of sophistication otherwise your money will be wasted on them.
  2. Stainless Steel Coil: The 430-grade stainless steel wire is the best possible material for a stainless steel coil based vaping coil. The 430-grade stainless steel wire is also known for its strong magnetic properties. Using a stainless steel vaping coil, you can expect to get one of the most versatile metals available in vaping coils and can also use it to precisely control the coil’s temperature. In addition, vape users have reported that some of their stainless vaping coils have lasted them more than 20 years. So you can expect stainless steel coils to last more or less along the lines of that. Unless you buy a cheap steel vape coil and then see it get broken rather easily. This is exactly why you should use a 430 grade steel wire for the added convenience and longevity that it provides. Source: vapegazette.com
  3. Titanium Coil: Titanium wires are remarkably soft, and hence they are very easy to handle, twist and cut. But they are also, at the same time, more expensive than steel wires. Using a titanium wire as a vaping coil actually provides you with a clean and crispy vaping aroma. But that is more of a personal choice regarding what type of vaping aroma you want from your device. But one thing you should remember is that titanium coils are more expensive than every other type of vape coil. So if you are buying one make sure you are buying a good quality pen with advanced features. Since you are paying quite a steep price for a titanium coil you should expect a decent vape pen too. Another thing that you need to see is that titanium is more flammable than other coils, so be extra cautious when dealing with titanium since it can catch fire rather quickly. This is exactly why you will see some vaping coils have a special ‘TC Ti’ mode.
  4. Kanthal Coil: Kanthal is an alloy that is a combination of iron, chromium and aluminum. It has a super quick ramp-up time and also creates a decent amount of vape aroma. But you can only use Kanthal coils in wattage mode since it is soft and strong. It is hence a popular vaping coil used by many.
  5. Nickel Coil: You will find many nickel wire type vape coils, and it can also be confusing for the average user. So try to read the coil specification and see if you have a Ni200 nickel wire, a 99.6% nickel alloy. Nickel Ni200 coil is a good quality low resistance wire which can give you varying control over the coil temperature. But since they have lower resistance you should refrain from using them with variable voltage kits or variable wattage kits.
  6. Nichrome Coil: Nichrome coil is made from chromium and nickel in 80% and 20% ratio respectively. This wire heats up faster than the Kanthal coil and offers a warm soothing vape aroma. Also, another problem which a lot of users face is that their vape coil alters the taste and color of the e-liquid by oxidizing it. These problems do not happen with nichrome based coils. But nichrome coils have a rather strange disadvantage i.e they cannot be used in any mode other than wattage mode.

Conclusion

There are lots of different vaping coils and each have their own merit, so you as an end user have to choose according to what suits your needs.
