Magnets and everything that you need to know about them

A magnet is an object, or it can be material as well, that produces a magnetic field. This magnetic field is invisible to our eye but is responsible for some things that are happening around us.

The magnetic force is basically a force that is able to pull on other ferromagnetic materials and objects and can also attract or repel other magnets. Now, that’s for the standard magnets we all know of. But you might be wondering, what are rare earth magnets, and what is the difference between them and the standard ones that we just talked about?

Well, a permanent rare earth magnet is the one which is made from a material that always stays magnetized. The difference is that these materials are always magnetized, and stay that way, while the other ones such as the Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt, are called ferromagnetic, and they can be periodically magnetized.

What types of rare earth magnets are there?

There are several types of rare earth magnets. A Ferrite Magnet, the NdFeB magnet, a Samarium cobalt magnet (SmCo) and the AiNiCo magnet. We are not really going to go in-depth about each one of these separately, because the terms are a bit too specific and you probably won’t be needing that information anyway, so let’s move on to something that you are interested in.

Which magnets are the strongest?

The rare earth magnets such as the Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt are the strongest ones out there. And here is an example for you to understand their strength better. According to aomagnet.com, a magnet that is of the neodymium kind, in the size of a pencil eraser, cannot be pulled off the surface of a freezer by just using your hand. That’s how strong these magnets really are.

Which magnets are seeing a use in everyday life?

As we already know, magnets serve a great purpose in many different areas of everyday life, devices, industries, medicine and what not. Rare earth magnets such as the neodymium magnets play a significantly important role in many toys, computers, credit cards and MRI machines.

Choosing the right magnet

Before buying a magnet, especially if you are planning to buy a really powerful one, you need to identify the purpose and the reason you are buying it. This will help you when it comes to narrowing down the list of options and choosing a magnet that will serve you best. If you have a local store that sells magnets, feel free to ask some of the people who work there for a few tips and advice. They will most likely be glad to help you.

Safety precautions

Magnets are not really as harmless as people think they are, especially when really powerful ones are taken into consideration. There are a few safety precautions that you need to know before handling powerful magnets. Wearing gloves and head protection is pretty important if you have two magnets with great force close to each other.
