A Valentine’s Day Love Letter To Myself

by The Frisky January 31, 2020
by The Frisky January 31, 2020

For Valentine’s Day, instead of waiting for love letters that’ll never come—because who sends those anymore, anyway?—we decided to practice a little self-love in the name of St. Valentine by writing them to ourselves. We invite you to do the same in the comments. First up, Amelia gives herself some love…

With Valentine’s Day only a 2 week away, I wanted to take a moment to remind you of all the reasons I love you. I imagine there is part of you that is feeling a little lonely right now. I know you wish you had someone to say “I love you” to, someone special who would say it back and mean it, you know, romantically. But why not be your own special someone?

I love that you love so willingly, even when it’s directed at those who haven’t earned it. I love that you’ve realized you need to love yourself first before offering it to someone else so freely. I’m proud that you’ve decided to stop giving your body, your time, and your energy away until you’ve fully appreciated their value. You’ve already made such great strides—you should be proud! You ignored a booty call; you went back to yoga and started meditating again; you’re working on not letting negative, irrational, and impulsive thoughts dominate your brain waves. You’re getting to know you better than ever and I’m confident you’ll discover your own self to be the best damn company there is.

After all, you’re hilarious! Girl, your Twitter feed cracks my ass up. You’re hardworking and passionate about what you do, as the success of The Frisky can attest. You’re a great listener and have gotten better about opening up with others—while sharing about your struggles, experiences, and feelings on paper/online has been relatively easy for you, revealing your emotions one-on-one has been a lifelong struggle. In the last few years, you’ve showed a willingness to trust people with your vulnerability, despite the risk of being letdown by their reactions, and it’s been rewarded with some of the most valuable friendships of your life. You deserve good friends because you are a good friend. It’s one of the things I love about you, bitch.

You know what else I love about you? Here’s a few other thing off the top of my head:

  1. Speaking of bitches, I love how much you love and prioritize Lucca in your life. In turn, that bitch loves you.
  2. I really love that you will belt out Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” at karaoke, even though your voice would not get you through to Hollywood on “American Idol.” You don’t avoid things that are fun, just because you’re not particularly good at them.
  3. I love that you figured out a way to forgive the two people who did you the most wrong and getting rid of the anger in your heart has enriched your life. You now have a great relationship with one of them and are okay with not having a relationship at all with the other.
  4. I love the way you look. I know it’s shallow, but given that you had such low self-esteem as a teen, after being hit with a trifecta of the fugs—glasses, braces, and acne, oh my!—it’s great to see how much confidence you have in your appearance now. You may not be a model beauty, but you have gorgeous thick hair, a big smile, a fit, healthy body, and, if I may be so bold, an ass that could stop traffic. If i was a dude, I would want to tap it, even though I know you wouldn’t let me because of the sabbatical and all. Best of all, you look the most beautiful when you feel the most beautiful, regardless of whether you’ve showered, or put on a high pair of heels, or have just woken up.

Those are just a few of the things I love about you. I didn’t get a chance to point out that I love how much your writing has grown, or what a great daughter and sister you are, or that you put together IKEA furniture better than any Swedish carpenter. I’ll save that and more for next year.

For now, I just wanted to say that I f**king love you, Amelia. Happy Valentine’s Day, darling.
