Even though we all think of the royal family members as of cool people who are widely known for their calm exteriors and, of course, traditional stiff upper lip, they are only humans, after all, right? So, apart from all those happy moments and beautiful celebrations, there were also those sad, touching moments in their lives. Here we mention some of those.
In November 2014, the Duchess of Cambridge attended a launch event for East Anglia Children’s Hospices charity, and though she managed to pull it together while present on the engagement, she was seen tearing up in the car when she was leaving. Kate Middleton was four months pregnant with Princess Charlotte at the moment, and she spoke to Leigh Smith, and attendee who lost her three-month-old baby Beatrice due to a rare heart condition. As she later revealed, Kate came to her just before she left the event: “Kate gave me a hug just before she left. I was getting quite teary-eyed, she had tears in her eyes and she just said to me, ‘You’re a very brave lady and again, I’m just so, so sorry.’”
More than 20 years earlier, Princess Diana was seen crying in a similar situation, when she attended Ashworth Hospice in Liverpool. She was widely known for her empathy, and during this engagement, she couldn’t help bursting into tears.
In January 2016, Prince Charles’ wife Camilla visited the Safelives Centre in London to speak to victims of domestic abuse. When she talked to Diana Parkes, whose daughter Joanna Brown was murdered by husband Robert, she couldn’t hold her tears in any longer.
Even the Queen herself was seen overwhelmed by her emotions when she visited the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in 2002. What can we say – it seems that Remembrance Sunday is always a poignant event in the royal family calendar. And this was not the first time that Her Majesty was seen crying in public. The first time was actually in 1997. Up until that moment, she was normally stoic, but when her beloved HMY Britannia was decommissioned, she couldn’t help but shed a tear. She had to say goodbye to her beloved luxury yacht that had been in the family for 40 years. During the ceremony, Queen’s daughter Princess Anne also cried.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway found King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 75th birthday celebration really emotional when she attended the event at the Oslo Opera House. Even though the King was born in February and the Queen in July, they decided to celebrate their birthdays together in May.
For Queen Silvia of Sweden, the especially emotional moment was the wedding of her daughter Crown Princess Victoria in June 2010.
Queen Maxima of the Netherlands was brought to tears during a memorial service in Apeldoorn held to pay tribute to those killed or injured in the horrific Queen’s Day attack, which happened in 2009.
Furthermore, Queen Mathilde of Belgium was seen crying when she paid her respects to Queen Fabiola, the queen consort of King Baudouin of Belgium, at the funeral in 2014 at the service in Brussels, accompanied by her husband King Phillipe and their four children.
For Princess Stephanie of Monaco, the 24th International Circus Festival was what brought her to tears. This is an annual event in the Monegasque royal calendar.
In 2011, Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian right-wing extremist, killed 77 people in two attacks. Princess Martha Louise of Norway was seen crying when her country marked one year since this tragic event, during which Princess Mette-Marit of Norway’s stepbrother died.
Little Prince George cried during a family day out at the polo in summer 2018, but, of course, his mother Kate was there to comfort him.
Kate Middleton’s daughter also had a teary moment the same year, during the 2018 Trooping the Colour ceremony, when she slipped and fell. Little Princess Charlotte banged her head on the balcony railing, but her mother was there to comfort her, too, scooping her up into her arms.
Similarly to these two siblings, their father, Prince William, was also comforted by his mother, Princess Diana, when he was a child, during a sports day in Richmond back in 1990.
Young Princess Beatrice was really sad and burst into tears when they refused her friend the entry to the Royal Box at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club in 1991.
Finally, even though she hasn’t been in the royal family that long, Meghan Markle has already shown us some tears, though hers were tears of happiness when a group of school children sang a funny song to her and husband Prince Harry, about mosquitos, when she visited Tonga.
