Gianfranco Cardinal Ravasi, the Vatican’s culture minister, was trying to do a solid by tweeting lyrics from the Lou Reed song “Perfect Day,” as a tribute to the late singer who passed away this weekend. You can see how it would be easy to mistake the lyrics for a simple love song:
Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spent it with you
Oh, such a perfect day
You just keep me hanging on.
It sounds like a sweet song about two lovebirds who spent a day at the park. But those of us who are fans found out a long time ago that it was really about Reed’s struggle with his sexuality and, well, his heroin use. The Catholic Church never got that memo and were forced to retract their tweet — lest they should reap just what they sow. [NY Post]
