We all want at least once in our lifetime to change our hair look, and as summer approaches, and vacations start, it is a need more than ever.
Of course, since the summer is full of soft colors and lights, we usually tend to pick some very subtle changes, such as highlights – especially babylights and balayage.

What is Balayage?
Balayage started in France, during the ‘70s, and it means ‘to sweep or paint’. It is used for painting the hair so that it seems like your highlights are starting strong from the roots, but lighter as it goes down.
What is Babylights?
Babylights are considered to be small highlights. They give a more natural look, just like children’s highlights. It is a tiny section of hair that is used together for highlighting.
Difference or not?
Now, most people can’t see a difference between these two, and we can understand why, but there is a good one! Let’s go through some of them:
Even though both are considered highlights, it is beneficial to know that they use different types of techniques.
The technique that is used for babylights is just the same as doing regular highlights, and that is using foils, whilst balayage’s technique is a freehand one – it is painted on and processed in open air or under plastic.
Surely you are thinking now ‘But which one is better for me?’ and we have an answer for that.
Balayage is a type of highlight that gives you a fresh and warmer look like you were sunbathing your whole vacation. Babylights, on the other hand, give a more youthful and natural look, resulting in high quality.
Can it be done at home?
Although some people say that it is possible, we do not recommend it unless you are a professional. There is absolutely no reason to go through so much annoyance and mess when it can be nicely done by good hairstylists in the salon.
Want to try it for yourself? – Yes!
Just like we said before, these things are the best to get done by professionals, and if you think that it is an easy process to do – it’s not! It is a very serious job, and it can go wrong if you are trying it out by yourself, especially if you are a beginner. To avoid any complications, you can easily make a reservation. Am I choosing the right option? – Balayage vs. Babylights
We can help you with your choice while giving you a few key points.
Let’s start by saying that the first and most important thing is your taste. Whatever you like, and think it through, you should do it.
The next one would be your hair type. Whereas babylights go with any type of hair, balayage does not. However, do not get us wrong. That doesn’t mean that balayage looks plain on some types, it just goes better with some than others, just like babylights. Indeed, they work well with all, but they do look the best on people with fine hair – if you want something more aesthetically pleasing. In a contrast, balayage looks best on thick and wavy hair since it gives the bold look.
Your hair color plays an important role too. If you have darker hair, balayage would be the move, and for all types, dark and light? – babylights it is. Why is that? As we said earlier, the point of doing a balayage is to have natural roots, but lighter ends. There is a big chance if you have lighter hair, as well as roots, doing balayage will make little to no difference. That’s when the babylights jump in. Since they come in all types of colors, brunettes and blondes can both enjoy this type of highlight.
More damaging technique? Does it exist?
Generally, both of these methods are somewhat damaging as they are both required of using bleach. They are damaging if not used properly, but the chances are smaller to almost nothing if a professional does the work. We can say that balayage is fairly damaging than babylights. It is because the stronger bleach is used for it, as it has to surpass the unwanted brass tones. If you are reconsidering your decision now, there’s no need for that. Everything done by a professional hairstylist can’t be harmful.
Hard maintenance? Do we know that?
The only thing both babylights and balayage agree on is the maintenance. They are relatively easy to maintain.
As you are not dying the whole hair, the growing out is decreased and less noticeable. We do have to mention that even though they are almost the same, balayage is a bit more evident as it grows out than babylights. But that is not such a big difference. Still, expect to refresh both in about 12-14 weeks.
There are still a few other influences too, such as how fast your hair grows, what hair products you use, the diet you are on, or the biggest one – your genetics.
We do have to mention that even though there isn’t hard maintenance, there is a bit of a frequent one.
What’s the best option for styling?
Before choosing anything, ask yourself – what type of style do I wear the most?
If it’s a ponytail or a bun – babylights are better, but if it’s a hair down, balayage is the way. Of course, as always, babylights look very good even on hair down, but balayage will not portray the complete look – as the highlights will not come to expression. Either way, both can be beautifully styled!
Conclusion:
Now that we’ve ended, we sincerely hope we helped you with your choice! Don’t forget that everyone has unique hair and appearance, so you should not make any fast decisions. Give yourself some time to think about it. We hope you will make the great decision for yourself, and make a confident transformation!
