Even when Prince Charles confessed to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles during his marriage with Princess Diana, Princess Diana never wanted a divorce. However, something changed her mind.
Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles married in 1981, but their fairytale wedding didn’t come close to the reality of their married life. Even before their wedding, Princess Diana suspected that Prince Charles still had feelings for his old girlfriend, Camilla. Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially divorced in 1996, and Diana never wanted a divorce. “Given the choice, she would have stayed and tried to make a happy marriage,” her personal trainer/confidant, Jenni Rivett, said in an episode of Yahoo’s The Royal Box.
However, Diana didn’t have any other option. “She loved Charles,” said Rivett. Rivett was working with Diana from 1991 to the day that Diana died in 1997. “She wasn’t the one who wanted to separate or divorce. She was sad about it. She wanted to be a loving wife.”
Another reason for not wanting a divorce were her two children, William and Harry. She didn’t want to put them through divorce stress she once experienced as a child when her parents got divorced. Even though Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated in 1992, she confessed in an interview with Martin Bashir in 1995 that she wasn’t a fan of divorce.
In that same interview, Diana said, “Well, there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” She also admitted her affair with cavalry officer James Hewitt, who already spilled the beans on his relationship with Princess Diana in his tell-all book.
The New York Times stated in 1996 that the reason Princess Diana is telling how she doesn’t want a divorce is that she wanted to make Charles look like a bad guy.
That and Prince Charles’ confession from 1994 about his affair with Camilla forced Queen Elizabeth II to write a letter to both of them to get a divorce. Since Prince Charles wanted one, Princess Diana changed her mind at the end, due to the queen’s letter, and they officially divorced in August 1996.
