Everything You Need To Know About Family Trees, And How to Make One

by Wendy Stokes April 18, 2019

A family tree is the most topical and common form of visual representation and documentation of your entire family and ancestry. A family tree can look anything from an actual tree where each branch represents a family member, to a simple box representation where each box is a family member. Each box or branch from your family tree shows a person and his birthplace, year of birth, year of death, and any other useful information that you would like to add.

A family tree perfectly shows each family member’s relationships and the children of their relationship. Each generation is organized into a single level, making it very easy to see the roots of each family member.

This type of visual representation is very useful for any young family member that likes to know their entire family better. It is an excellent concept that keeps track of each family member and their relationships, children, etc. Furthermore, it’s very easy to keep track of everything due to the simplistic nature of drawing one.

How to Make a Family Tree

We mentioned earlier that making a family tree is very easy and straightforward. The easiest way to make one is to use an already created template that eliminates the need for drawing boxes and connecting lines. However, make sure to know your family members first before starting one. If you come from a family that has had historical roots dating all the way back to the 1800s, then you can visit this website where you can discover your ancestors.

Now let’s get back on the subject of how to make one.

Your family will most likely be a big one, as most families are, with roots dating a while back. So, because of that, you will need to decide how many generations you want to show. A great place to determine the head of the family is to draw from you and go back until you make it to the eldest in your family. Once you’ve found out the “first” family member, start creating a box for each of his descendants. Each of their children will have a box of their own and will be connected with a straight line, showing they are siblings. Then, make sure to add a box next to them for their spouses, and draw lines downward and create new boxes for their children. In each box, you can add a picture of the family member (if you have one), you can add their name, place of birth, time of birth, and time of death. You can always add any extra information as you wish.

To make the entire task easier, make sure that each layer represents a single generation. That way you will gain a better understanding of each generation, and you will not lose any track.

Best Practices For Family Trees

Whenever you’re creating a family tree, an increasingly popular choice is to make the entire tree shared electronically. That way you can send your family tree to each family member and they can keep track of the progress of the family as well. You can get very creative with the design of the family tree, as we mentioned that not all have to look simplistic with boxes.
