The line of succession for the British throne is one of the most debated topics in the world, especially since Queen Elisabeth reigning for so long and no success in recent times. To complicate things further, Prince William now has three children, all of whom are eligible for the crown. And then there is Prince Harry and his family, including Meghan Markle.
Each member of the Royal family has a place in the line of succession, but some are near the top of that line and are second or third, while others are placed far lower, making their chance of taking the crown almost non-existent, barring some unforeseen disaster that would wipe out most of the Royal family. The succession follows the first-born child of a ruling monarch, meaning that upon Queen’s death Prince Charles will be crowned king and after his death, Prince William. William will be inherited by his first-born child, Prince George.
However, that doesn’t mean that Kate Middleton will be crowned queen once Prince William takes the throne. She will be known as Queen consort. Queen Elisabeth, who is a daughter of a king, is queen regnant, or a ruling queen.
The rule doesn’t apply to husbands, though. Only the wife of a king can become Queen consort. The husband of a queen regnant doesn’t get to be a King consort and remains a Prince, like Prince Philip, the Queen Elisabeth’s husband. Five years after their marriage, Philip was named Prince of the United Kingdom, as a sort of conciliatory award.
This all means that Meghan Markle has a very slight chance of ever becoming the Queen. She will be crowned only if Prince Harry becomes King and chances for that are very slim. He would have to outlive Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and all children they may have in order to ascend to the throne, making Meghan queen consort.
Although she will probably never become queen, that doesn’t stop Meghan from participating in various charity actions that have already made her one of the most popular members of the Royal family. Her fans see all the hard work she is putting in and they respect and love her for it, queen or no queen.
