Perfect Guides On Making DIY Lace Hair Wig

by Wendy Stokes March 3, 2023
by Wendy Stokes March 3, 2023

If you are a fan of human hair wigs, you must have known how amazing lace hair wigs are. The transparent lace part makes this type look so natural. The lace seems like the user’s real scalp and gives no hints of wearing extensions at all. However, owning a lace wig is not easy for everyone as its price is quite high. This is the reason why you need to read the below guides on making one at home. After that, you will be able to custom wigs yourself at affordable costs and with high-quality ingredients.

Contents

1. An Overview of Lace Hair Wigs

The lace wig is one of the most popular wig types in the market. We have monofilament, capless or hand-tied types, etc. Among all, lace types are always items to turn to for naturalness. There are 3 types of lace hair wigs which are pretty popular now:

  • Lace frontal wigs: Lace front types are made of human weft bundles and frontals. The frontals give many hairline options such as the middle part, free part or three part, so hairstyles with this type are natural and flexible.
  • Lace closure wigs: Lace closure types are made of human weaves and closures. Technically, lace frontal and lace closure types are similar to each other, except for the difference of the lace sizes.
  • Full lace wigs: With this type, the lace part covers almost all the head, and it looks really natural. Full lace or 360 lace types are always top choices.

In terms of DIY, lace frontal and lace closure types are the best to custom yourself. Their structures simply contain 2 main parts: weft bundles and closure/frontal. All the ingredients are abundant, easy to buy, and the wigs are just easy to make.

2. Steps to Custom a Lace Hair Wig at Home

In fact, there are many methods you can use to custom a lace frontal/closure wig such as machine-sewing, hand-sewing or taping. This post is about an easy-to-follow but still good-looking method, the hand-sewing one. Let’s dig into the preparation before heading to the steps.

2.1 List of Ingredients for a Lace Hair Wig

Before starting to make a lace wig, please make sure you have enough ingredients:

  • 1 mannequin head
  • 1 wig cap
  • 2-3 weft bundles
  • 1 closure or frontal
  • tools: T pins, scissors, marker, needle and thread (curved needle)

The list is pretty simple. Except for the direct components, the other tools are almost all available at your house! The only thing to notice is how to choose the components properly:

  • How to choose a right-size mannequin head: You will need to measure your head size. Just use a tape measure to do so. You’d better have someone help you to get the right number of your head “width” and “length”. This is also an advantage of DIY. You decide the size, so no worry of too loose or too tight ready-made ones.
  • How to choose matching bundles and closure/frontal: What matters is length and style. To make sure the bundles and closure/frontal are matching and blending well with each other, you’d better choose them of the same length and style. It is also recommended when the closure/frontal is 2 inches shorter than the bundles. In terms of style, you can add ombre color to the closure/frontal if you prefer as well. This will not affect the blending result.

2.2 Step-by-step Instruction to Make a Lace Hair Wig

Here are the detailed steps that you are looking for:

Step 1: Fixing the mannequin head: You can put it on a table, or you’d better fix it on a tripod.

Step 2: Fixing the cap: Make sure you stretch the cap. After that, please fix it on the mannequin head with T pins.

Step 3: Attaching the closure/frontal: You will need to apply the frontal or closure on the cap first. Then, pin down the front middle and 2 ending edges of the closure/frontal. After that, tie the hair neatly for the next steps.

Step 4: Marking the weft lines: You will need to follow these lines to sew the wefts onto the cap afterwards. This step also decides how many bundles you need to cover the lines. Normally, the space between 2 lines should be around 1.5 centimeters.

Step 5: Sewing the wefts: To sew the weft, you need to use a curved needle to fix the weft on the marked lines. At the end of each line, make sure you tie a knot before cutting off the left weft so that the sewn one won’t fall out easily. Not cutting the weft beforehand but after sewing is a tip that ensures proper weft length, especially when you are not used to estimating it.

Step 6: Sewing frontal/closure: The technique is totally similar to weft sewing. After this, you can remove all the T pins, and your lace hair wig is done!

3. Recommended Addresses to Buy Ingredients

As important as the above steps is where to buy high-quality and affordable ingredients. This is always the top issue of DIY.

Tools (T pins, scissors, marker, curved needle and thread) are easily found at stationery stores, or you can also use what you already have at home.

A variety of choices of mannequin heads and caps are available in local salons or e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, etc. The qualities are quite the same, so you just need to pick your convenient choice.

Weft bundles and closure/frontal are what to pay attention to for high quality but affordable prices. If you already have reliable suppliers, then just go straight to them. Otherwise, importing extensions from Vietnam to custom lace hair wigs is a good idea. Don’t be afraid of the idea of importing or wholesale. The wholesale sample order is actually only 3 bundles and 1 closure/frontal, which is perfect enough to custom 1 wig!

The reason to import extensions from Vietnam is that Vietnam is well-known as the best-established supplier of high-quality Vietnamese virgin and remy hair. What’s more, there are real factories here with domestic raw material sources, so the prices are direct and the cheapest! Just make a try and you’ll be satisfied!

If you need a reliable manufacturer in Vietnam, try working with hair suppliers K-Hair, the biggest hair factory in Vietnam. They have more than 30 years of experience in exporting extensions and has become the partners of thousands of customers worldwide, so its prestige is confirmed.

Hope that the guides and information given are useful for you. Just follow the steps and you will certainly complete a beautiful handmade lace hair wig. The steps are sure to be the most detailed and easy-to-follow ones shared by an experienced hair factory.
