I couldn’t tell you why, but I have a sinister obsession with the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Yes, they’re wonderfully pretty, and have insane bodies, and all that stuff, but I find myself kind of intrigued by whether or not they’re real people. Are they aliens? Tall, lithe, bronzed to perfection, fast-metabolizing aliens with silky long hair and bedroom eyes? There’s something innately bizarre about all of them, especially their questionable grips on reality. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley recently expressed her opinion that it’s worth it for every woman to “put away a dollar a week” to save up for $700+ Christian Louboutin heels, a process that would take 14 years. Really logical, Rosie.
But the Angel that both fascinates and baffles me the most is Miranda Kerr.
Girls everywhere, of all ages, shed a tear for what might have been when she got her claws in Orlando Bloom, even more so when she had his baby. She wore the $2.5 million Fantasy Treasure Bra in this year’s show. Sure, her ultra-fit silhouette may be the tops, her face pretty but plain. While childhood photos of the other Angels reveal an inherent beauty throughout youth, Miranda is utterly unremarkable in comparison. I’ve always wondered what her draw is, what makes her so captivating. New York magazine’s Intelligencer spent some time with Kerr on the night of the show, and I am fascinated by their take on her. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that they kind of tear her apart. My favorite sentence of the piece: “Kerr shows a strong reluctance to utter any sentences not purely banal.” Intense.
