There are a number of benefits from wearing contact lenses. From being able to see better, and improving your appearance, to being able to participate in training exercises and sports activities. But, like most things on this earth, there are some risks concerning contact lenses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 40 % and 90 % of contact lens wearers do not follow instructions accordingly, and do not follow proper care for their lens.

And according to the same organization, at least 30 million Americans wear contact lenses, and at least two-thirds are female.

So to clear the water, we are going to tell you about the most important things you need to know about contact lenses.

  • 6.    Pay Attention To Your Eyes

1.    Avoid Water

The single most important thing to know about contact lenses is that you should never wear them around water. Water sites like lakes, oceans, pools, rivers, hot tubs, and even tap water are the home of a naturally occurring amoeba. These are microscopic one-celled animals that can inflict your eyes, and if not cared properly, they can cause permanent vision loss, a condition called “Acanthamoeba keratitis.” Not wearing your contact lens while showering or hitting the beach is extremely advisable by every ophthalmologist. Furthermore, cleaning your contact lens with tap water of saliva is not a sterile option so make sure to avoid that as well.

2.    Always Rub

Most researches find that cleaning your lens should always consist of rubbing your lenses. This is due to the fact that when rubbing, you remove all deposits of soft lenses. It’s extremely advisable for you to follow up your cleaning with a nice rub of the lens. This is a necessary solution that will only benefit you. Another tip on lens care is to never reuse the same solution, always use a fresh one every day.

3.    Never Sleep With Your Lens

This is a simple thing that can be a lifesaver. Firstly, it’s not quite safe sleeping with your contact lenses because of the trouble most people have tolerating them. Secondly, bacteria, pathogens, and irritations thrive in dry and less oxygenic environments. While we are sleeping with your lens, you are making your eyes vulnerable to these infections.

4.    Always Take Proper Hygiene

Never touch your lens without washing your hands first. Bacteria and germs can easily transfer from your hands to your contact lens, and subsequently, to your eyes. This will cause major infections to your eyes and can lead to irritations, redness, scratching, and more. Furthermore, make sure to avoid heavy and oily soaps, and make sure to always dry your hands with a new towel that will be used only for lens hygiene.

5.    Clean and Replace Your Lens Storage Case

An advised solution is to replace your contact lens storage case every three months. Another advise doctors give to wash your storage case with hot water, and then to let it air-dry itself.

6.    Pay Attention To Your Eyes

If you feel that something is wrong with your lens, then it’s mostly due to dust or maybe dirt underneath the lens. You can fix this by rinsing the lens with rewetting drops or perhaps a non-peroxide solution. Check
