If you aren’t familiar with what a weight blanked is, then you’re missing out on a very useful thing in your life. It seems that the bedding industry is upgrading with each passing year. First, we saw an introduction to the revolutionary memory foam for mattresses and pillows, and then we got a glimpse of customized pillows, and now weighted blankets.

If you happen to recognize either of these, then you’re probably familiar with their usefulness. But do you even know what weighted blankets are? If you’re reading this article, then perhaps you don’t. But that’s nothing to be ashamed of, as this is yet another new trend that is slowly sweeping America like a storm.

So, to clarify things for you, we’ve decided to do our due diligence and make an article explaining everything to know regarding the recent trend of weighted blankets. Without further ado, let’s start.

What Is a Weighted Blanket?

This trend is gaining a lot of popularity and for good reasons. We live in a world where stress and anxiety are very common disorders. Truthfully speaking, they plague our society and can cause a lot of harm to a person.

Anxiety is capable of destroying a person’s life, while stress can slowly develop into various health problems, most of them associated with your heart. These two disorders can also make a person lose sleep and unwillingly lose weight.

So, how would a weighted blanked help a person eliminate these disorders? Well, as it turns out, these blankets are staying true to their name given. They are filled with soft materials, mostly pellets, polypropylene plastic, cotton, etc, to give the person using them the much-needed weight. This, ultimately, simulates a hugging sensation, which helps the user.

These can also come with various weights. For example, you can one specifically designed for adults, which ranges in anything between 10 and 30 pounds of weight. There are also children-friendly blankets that are drastically lighter but still simulate the same hugging sensation.

As a general note, you should never cover your infant with a weighted blanket. These are not recommended for a small child, and should never be used with one.

The whole point of these is not to replace your existing comforter, but to be used in various situations where the need for a soft, soothing, and gentle touch is needed. They are designed to fit an entire person, depending on the size, but won’t offer any extra warmth. They are still blankets and are used so that a person could apply extra pressure when needed.

There are some extra-large sizes, typically made to accommodate the size of your mattress.

Weighted blankets can be found as a whole piece, or come as two separate pieces that can be washed or used interchangeably.

What Are the Benefits?

Oh boy, where to start… Weighted blankets have many uses and even more benefits for the wearer.

Let’s start with the obvious one, which is…

1. Ease Insomnia

Insomnia is a real problem with many people. Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that makes it incredibly frustrating and hard for a person to shut their eyes and go to bed. Most sufferers from insomnia go days, weeks, and sometimes even months without sleep. It is a disorder that many people have, many people have experienced, and even more, will at some point in their lives.

With the use of weighted blankets, people can easily fall asleep due to the gentle pressure that the blankets provide the user.

2. Reduces Anxiety

The next very common disorder that almost 40 million Americans suffer from is anxiety. Anxiety, as we mention, can singlehandedly destroy a person’s life. And while there are various ways to combat its devastating effects, one highly effective one is to use a weighted blanket.

With anxiety, the person suffering experiences triggers that make it impossible to do even the easiest of things. Anxiety is closely related to stress, and people mostly experience it when having to do something out of their comfort zone, or be at a place they don’t feel comfortable at.

There are various forms of anxiety, some even simulate panic attacks. As a matter of fact, stress, panic attacks, and anxiety have a lot of similarities, and each one is equally devastating as the rest.

And as we mentioned, a weighted blanket simulates a gentle touch or hug, which has been proven very effective in combating the effects of anxiety.

3. For ADHD

ADHD makes it very hard for a person to keep focused and concentrated. ADHD can plague anyone, from adults to children. In the case of children, ADHD makes it very hard for them to keep up in class, while it creates impulsiveness and restlessness with adults.

There is more than one symptom of anxiety, with the bottom line being that it can affect every person differently.

And, like with anxiety and insomnia, a simulated human touch or a hug can drastically help fight the condition by providing the wearer a calming and soothing effect.

4. Ease Restless Leg Syndrome

Source: bradsdeals

Ask anyone suffering from this syndrome to describe it and he will describe it to you like a creepy-crawly feeling in their legs. This tingling feeling can lead to many disorders, of which most occurring ones are insomnia.

Restless leg syndrome makes it very hard for a person to fall asleep, due to the tingling feeling in their legs. This syndrome also makes it very hard for a person to drive. Traveling is made very uncomfortable, and patients suffering from it have described it as a nightmare.

And, like anything else, there is more than one way to combat restless leg syndrome. One way is to use a compression sock, while others schedule massage therapies.

However, a very convenient and successful way of combating this syndrome is to use the weighted blanket we’ve been talking about this entire time. Since this syndrome is best combated when pressure is applied, the blanket provides the much-needed pressure, without having to squeeze your leg too hard.
