What to do in Orlando (Other Than Theme Parks)

by Wendy Stokes May 18, 2019
by Wendy Stokes May 18, 2019

We all know that the mouse with the big black ears gets the lion’s share of the press when it comes to Orlando (although a certain boy wizard might give him a run for his money). However, this central Florida destination has plenty to offer even the most theme-park averse traveler.

So, whether you’re going for a weekend or you’re lucky enough to be moving to Orlando (for more on O-Town check out this Orlando moving guide by Suddath), read on for a list of things to do in O-Town that involve far less time waiting in line.

Kennedy Space Center

NASA’s launch site is situated about an hour outside of Orlando, but if you want to get technical, Lake Buena Vista is the actual home of a certain resort destination. At any rate, the journey will be well worth the drive. Here, you can shake hands with astronauts, take part in flight simulations, and perhaps even have the chance to witness an actual launch.

Adult tickets are currently priced at about $61, but discounts are available if you purchase an all-inclusive pass such as the Go Orlando card. Arrive early in the day so you can take advantage of all the features the Center has to offer. Almost all of the exhibits are undercover, making this a good choice for rainy or chilly days.

WonderWorks

According to angieaway, this is a kid-friendly destination that features a rope course, a 6-D motion ride, and a laser tag arena. With its convenient I-Drive location just north of the Orange County Convention Center, it makes for a perfect afternoon excursion.

All-access passes to WonderWorks are set at about $32. Midweek is the best time to go, and the earlier in the day the better. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes, especially if you want to try your hand at the rope course.

Boggy Creek Airboat Rides

Amusement park rides have their perks, but there’s nothing like getting up close and personal with nature. This attraction invites guests to board six-passenger airboats for a 40-mph trip across the Florida Everglades. Have your camera at the ready—you’re likely to encounter an abundance of wildlife on this 45-minute journey. Nighttime excursions (which last one hour) are also available.

The cost of the daylight tour is $27.95 per adult and $21.95 per child (ages 3-10). The nighttime expedition is priced significantly higher, so if cost is a concern or if you have little ones in your party, you should probably stick with the earlier ride. Boggy Creek is located on East Southport Road in Kissimmee, just outside of Orlando.

Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf

Much more than just a miniature golf course, Pirate’s Cove takes visitors on an 18-hold swashbuckling adventure. Putt your way through caves and grottoes, beneath waterfalls, and over bridges for your chance to earn a daily hole-in-one prize.

This attraction is a lot of fun at night, and it’s open until 11:30 pm daily. Admission for 18 holes is $13.50 for adults, $11.95 for children ages 4-12 (ages 3 and under play for free). The course is conveniently located on I-Drive, making it easy to swing by right after lunch or dinner.
