Even though Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson got divorced in 1996, they are still living under the same roof. Sarah Ferguson is not really getting along with some of the members of the royal family, which begs the question – why are they still living together?
Divorce
They started dating in 1985, and after a couple of months, they announced that they are engaged. They got married on March 16, 1986, at Westminster Abbey. They welcomed their first child, Princess Beatrice of York on August 8, 1988, and their second child, Princess Eugenie of York on March 23, 1990. Less than two years after Princess Eugenie was born, their marriage started to fall apart and they split in 1992. Soon after the split, photos of John Bryan, an American financial advisor, sucking on Ferguson’s toes while she was sunbathing topless emerged. Due to the enormity of the scandal, they had to officially divorce in 1996.
Why do they still live together
Despite their relationship being bad, after the divorce, they remained on excellent terms. Ferguson even called them the world’s “happiest divorced couple.” The reason they still live together is that they enjoy each other’s company. They live in the Royal Lodge at Windsor. In 2015, Ferguson left the Royal Lodge to live in another property she and Prince Andrew share, in Verbier, Switzerland. A representative said that Fergie still has a room at Royal Lodge and she goes there occasionally. However, in 2018 Ferguson moved back in and shared what is like to live with her former husband. “Although we are not a couple, we really believe in each other,” she said. “The Yorks are a united family. We’ve shown it. You saw it at the [royal] wedding. We stand up for each other, fight for each other. We’re totally respectful of each other’s position and thoughts and we listen to each other … Andrew sits round the table and we have afternoon tea together. It’s a very important part of our lives.”
