In 2013, Oxford, those crazy ol’ coots, officially added the word “selfie” to the dictionary. Oh humanity, how far we have come. I am an unabashed fan of the selfie, as it’s just one way of documenting the fact that yes, I do indeed exist (and I sometimes even leave my apartment!). And I am not alone, clearly! The selfie was tied to a number of important events this year, including an astronaut’s space walk, the Presidential inauguration, Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, and Kim Kardashian’s attainment of the perfect post-baby body. The best thing about Kim K’s full-body bathing suit selfie, just a few months after daughter’s North’s birth, was fiance Kanye West’s reaction. “HEADING HOME NOW,” he urgently tweeted, letting the world know, basically, that he was about to put it in Miss Kim.

Astronaut Luca Parmitano’s Selfie From Space

In July, the Italian astronaut. who’s floating around the International Space Station, posted this selfie from space after completing a spacewalk. “This sure beats any ‘selfie’ I’ve done up to now,” he tweeted. Yup.

But the photographer who took this pic says the atmosphere at the memorial was actually more like a carnival or celebration, and the selfie wasn’t actually inappropriate in the way people thought. And First Lady Michelle Obama wasn’t mad about it either!
