Surfing is an exotic sport that holds a very special place into hearts of surfers and people living in Australia and Oceania. It’s a sport that is full of fulfilling life experiences and adrenalin rush.

For those reasons we are going to give you our top 7 reasons why you should learn to surf.

Contents

  • 1.    Heath Benefits
  • 2.    Confidence
  • 3.    Respect for Nature
  • 4.    Friendship
  • 5.    Culture
  • 6.    Travel
  • 7.    Surfing is a Great Release

1.    Heath Benefits

Surfing is a very physically demanding sport that will build up your level of physical fitness at every step of the learning process. A surf session will provide you with a full body work-out which includes upper body and core strength, mobility, stamina, lung capacity, and it will give you the motivation to maintain that high level of physical fitness.

2.    Confidence

Apart from the various physical and health benefits, surfing will increase your confidence. Learning how to surf is not easy. It requires a lot of courage and strength to overcome fears and even physical pain that comes with it. Building your confidence is something that comes along with surfing.

3.    Respect for Nature

Surfing happens in oceans, lakes, rivers, which are places that you don’t normally do that many activities. It opens people up to a newfound respect for nature and its environment. It allows you to experience the waters and oceans to a degree you have never experienced before. Surfing is a way of physical, mental, and spiritual connection between you and the natural world.

4.    Friendship

Being a surfer means being a part of a community of people all striving to do something alongside others and build a sense of achievement. Being part of a community means sharing experiences, both with the local and global community. It takes respect and commands respect. Sharing stories with others of your past experiences while drinking a cold one, it’s no wonder that surfers have a tribe mentality. One of the biggest positive about being a surfer is all the friendships you are going to make while riding the waves. There are many surf camps, like SWELL Surf Camp, where you can make new friends in and share past experiences with.

5.    Culture

The word “surf” appears on 90% of t-shirts in the world, but apart from that, surfing has always had a rich and varied history and contemporary culture.

Surfing has been rooted in the traditional Hawaiian royalties, and today is blossoming into a global community with a lot of subcultures. From California to Peru to even Munich, and the famous urban river surfers, surfing is a mix of different styles, different boards, different attitudes that all come together in the grand scheme of things to create a global community with the same culture.

6.    Travel

Surfing can be considered for some a luxury, for some a means to score better waves. If the area is flat, buckle up and find a beach where the waves are bigger. Surfing is a great way to travel the world and discover tropical paradises where you can escape for a few days and forget about everything, socialize, learn new cultures, and have a great time. Surfing allows you to see the world and all the exotic beaches it hides.

7.    Surfing is a Great Release

It doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have when it comes to surfing. When you surf, you experience stuff differently, and you learn how to appreciate stuff that is greater than you while maintaining that connection with the natural world. Surfing can be used as a way to get over yourself, and emotional release. It can be considered as wave therapy.
