What’s the procedure?
You may already know what needs to happen so Prince William can be the king. First, he needs to way for the two of his family members to die first. His grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and his father Charles. And when that happens, the procedure is still not easy. There are some things that must happen, and he also needs to go through some serious training before claiming the throne.
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch, and her successor is her son Prince Charles. Both Prince Charles and Prince William are lucky because they had the privilege to learn a lot from her. But for both, there are only two ways to be the next king. They need to wait for Queen Elizabeth to die or simply abdicate the throne. There is always a possibility for a queen or a king to abdicate the throne, but people who know Queen Elizabeth II say that she will never do that. But when the time comes, Prince Charles will be the new king of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, and Prince William will become the first in the line for the throne.
Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall
Something that’s interesting is that once Prince Charles becomes the king, Prince William’s titles will also change. He will lose his title as Duke of Cambridge and he will be passed with his father’s current titles, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall.
The two titles that he will inherit are the highest-ranking titles in the royal family, after the title of the monarch, and they are held only by the eldest son and the heir to the British throne.
The royal training
Prince William is already busy with his royal career. He is helping and stepping in for Queen Elizabeth II in knighting ceremonies. He also helped host some State Dinner, and he dedicated even more time to the royal business. Prince William now spends a lot of his time learning about his future obligations as Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge from his father and Queen Elizabeth is already helping him and teaching him what he will have to do once he becomes the king.
He also moved to Kensington Palace full time with his family so he would dedicate more time to the royal business. Prince William really did step up his royal game.
His training will continue once his grandmother passes and he will learn everything he needs to know from his father, who will become the next king.
The Duchy of Cornwall
Prince William now depends on Prince Charles for his income, but that will change once Prince Charles becomes king. Prince William will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall, and that means he will inherit a collection of land and property that gives income to the Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, and all his family members. This type of duchy will cover all his travels, expenses and cost of living.
Prince William will move out from Kensington Palace
Today Prince Charles is living at Clarence House, and once he becomes the king he will move to Buckingham Palace. That means that Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton and their children will probably move to Clarence House.
Prince Charles
Just like with Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II, for Prince William to become the king there are two options. Prince Charles needs to die or abdicate the throne. But if Prince Charles never abdicates the throne, when he dies Prince William will automatically become the new King of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms.
