Kelechi Okereke has always been an innovative musician, one that has always desired to bend the traditional norms of rock music, to sit better with his audience.
Okereke has had an incredibly successful music career, both as a solo artist and as a frontman for internationally known band Bloc Party. He famously pioneered art punk when co-forming Bloc Party in the early 2000s’. His career has changed since the days of Bloc Party and he has shaped his musical career as a dynamic and inventive solo artist, one that sits well with trends in London.
Kelechi Okereke has had four solo records. In 2010 he published “The Boxer” followed by “Trick” in 2014, “Fatherland” in 2017, and lastly, “Leave to Remain” in 2019.
With these four records and all the success with Bloc Party, Kelechi Okereke has come a long way since him humbling beginnings as a literature student. His passion for songwriting, having started it as a hobby, has grown well on him making him a very successful artist, one that is trending with the youth in London.
His personal projects have revealed him as an artist who has been enlightened by his growth as a person, what started from the studio now has transferred into his recent project “Leave to Remain”.
“Leave to Remain” is a collaboration with TV screenwriter Matt Jones, who used his skill and combined them with Kelechi Okereke’s music to create a play that follows the lives of two young adults, Alex and Obi.
Much parallels can be drawn between Obi and Kele himself, most notable is the fact that both are different with their orientation. Both are English with Nigerian descent, and both descent from religious families who latter have problems because of their orientation.
The singer has many talents, from being a singer-songwriter to being a guitarist, pianist, and record producer, to co-producing plays. His musical career with Bloc Party and his solo career is only a scratch on the surface. He started as the frontman of an indie rock band, and now composes music on various topics of society; most notable is his take on same orientation relationships.
Being a musician from Nigerian descent, who feels differently with his sexual orientation, Kelechi Okereke has had his fair share of media attention. He has composed music countless times to inspire young adults and feel proud of who they are. His music is also catchy and sits well with the youth in London. Kelechi has the courage and doesn’t feel the shame of tackling subjects (often deemed controversial by some) about his orientation. He, alongside with his male partner, is a father to a beautiful daughter, one that he obtained through means of surrogacy while in the US.
Kelechi Okereke has been making music that inspires individuals, and his music has often been the talking point amongst the London youth. His solo career and his band have been in the scene for quite some time and has gifted us with some amazing classics like Tenderoni, which was in the UK Top 30 at one point.
