Some people took to Twitter to demonstrate their allegiance for National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the victims of Wednesday’s horrific shooting in which a gunman opened fire in his hometown of Minnesota and then a UCLA engineering building, fatally shooting two people. We won’t get into armchair activism, but banding together through the color orange is the new philanthropy. As part of the #WearOrange campaign for gun safety, Amy Schumer posted a selfie sans underwear, which was extremely confusing.
Real talk, social media brings us together in difficult times, and there’s plenty of cathartic value in that. I say that with not even one ounce of sarcasm. On more than one occasion, I have felt badly about something or other, scrolled through a relevant hashtag, and felt way better knowing people were experiencing a similar issue, be it birth control, mental health or gender identity.
Among the standard tangerine t-shirts and peach pairs of pants boasting the hashtag was Schumer’s odd post, making some sort of cryptic statement. In the photo, she showed off her body in an orange leopard sports bra, complete with hella cleavage (or maybe the bra wasn’t even orange at all, and she tinkered with the warmth on the filter to make it appear so). It quickly becomes apparent that the bra is all she’s wearing… which is cool, I guess.
I hate calling it a tramp stamp for obvious reasons, but for all intents and purposes, let’s say her TS is showing. Below it, you see the clear tip of her ass crack. There is no faint g-string connecting the two and no elastic bands around the hips to suggest she is wearing flesh-colored underwear. You don’t see her vagina or anything, but there is a shadow of some sort on her left leg. Maybe it’s from pubic hair or her lower stomach. Who knows. All I know is that I know a naked body when I see one, and I have A LOT of questions: 1) Amy, WHY? 2) You have a great body. Please show us more of it? 3) Who was the marketing genius behind this, and was it the guy who put Carrie Bradshaw naked on a bus? I knew it, you sly devil, you. Twitter users responded to Schumer’s plea by replying with their own versions of what it means to #WearOrange and support the victims in whatever way they know how, while others threatened to have her deported. I mean, all is fair in love and the Internet.
Get past the first few minutes of confusion, and you’ll realize this is an intelligent way of drawing attention to an important cause. The post garnered misguided hormonal praise, sure, but it got people talking about gun violence and how we can work towards eradicating it, and that’s all that counts. Right? Right.
Schumer recently fired back at Glamour magazine for including her in their “plus-size” issue in collaboration with Lane Bryant without her permission. She wrote on an Instagram photo “I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me.” So, to see her using her massive platform to reclaim autonomy over her body and using it in a productive way gets all sorts of thumbs up emojis.
