A Vast Majority of American Couples Argue In The Home Buying Or Selling Process

A survey sheds some light on some of the most stressful parts of the home buying or selling process for couples.

One of the major steps that a couple can make together is buying or selling a house. This is one of the most significant milestones in the life of couples, every person has the house they have always dreamed of, the lady may want a house with a swimming pool, on the other hand, the husband may feel like the swimming pool is too much, and this can cause conflict between the two. The wife may feel that selling a house where they share too many memories is not acceptable; on the contrary, the husband may be looking to cash in on the house.

Zillow commissioned a survey on the conflict that arises when couples are trying to sell or buy a house because it was a trend that was evident and came up with some interesting statistics.

Over the past decade, the majority of Americans (79%) have bought a house while in a relationship. Similarly, a significant number of Americans (72%) have sold a house as a couple over the past decade. These two groups of couples have argued over the home selling process or buying process, each wanting something different than the other. This means that buying and selling of homes may take a toll on most of the relationships.

The majority of millennials are first time sellers; these are couples between the age of 25 and 39. Most of the Millennials (85%) have argued about whether to sell a house or not. Most of them are reluctant to sell a home because they feel that they are too young. Baby boomers, people above the age of 55 years, have had less (52%) conflict when selling a house. In most cases, this is a group that is not selling for the first time. A repeat sale makes it easier for the couple.

There are three major financial decisions that cause conflict for house selling couples. Here is a list.

  • Arguing whether to accept an offer for the house.
  • Beefing on what price they will sell the house.
  • Conflict on whether to reduce the price of the house.

According to UpNest, a platform that allows home buyers and sellers to locate a professional realtor, selling a house caused couples more stress than planning a wedding. Most of the house selling couples (33%) cry from the stress of selling a home. For more information about Upnest, check out bbb review page.

A good number (40%) argued with their significant other over the location of the house, while (39%) argued about the budget for the home they are buying. The majority (58%) have argued about the style and size of the house.

Mortgage options have also caused home-buying couples (around 25%) a lot of conflicts. Millennial has been very selective (64%) in buying homes, more than baby boomers (36%) who are in most cases buying a house for the second time.
