With the new year comes new change, and nothing starts a year off like making changes around the home. Home remodeling is one of the biggest items on the to-do list of many American families. Are thinking about remodeling your home? Maybe just upgrading the kitchen with new granite counters? Replacing the shower stall in the master bedroom? Or maybe you are thinking about some landscape design for the backyard, whatever is on your mind this year, this list of home remodeling ideas is a great place to start for anyone considering making some changes around the house.

More Natural Light
Natural light can brighten up any room in the home, it also is a great way to improve the mood in the house. Replacing old windows can be a great place to start, and while it’s not always an option to go bigger, it sure doesn’t hurt to ask your general contractor. Going dual pane will also help reduce your energy bill. Adding skylights is another great way to bring more sunshine into your home. Converting solid doors to sliding glass doors is also an option for updating the lighting in your home.
Turn Back The Clock
With all the modern amenities, I sometimes wonder how simple life might be without them? Ever thought about removing some the unnecessary electronic gadgets around the house and turning back the hands of time and updating the home with a new-old fashioned look? I’m not saying you should ditch the convenience of technology, I’m just saying if we eliminated some of the clutter and some of the distractions, maybe we would be more inclined to light a fire in the fireplace and read a book instead of sitting on the iPad all night binge watching Netflix.
Art Is Life
As a fan of art, I believe quality art can add life to a home’s interior. In my opinion, art can be a piano as a centerpiece, a painting, a floral arrangement, mural, ironworks, and statues. Any of these items listed could be featured in any of the rooms in a home. Kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms will all benefit from artwork being present in the room.
The Kitchen
No matter the culture, or the family, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Remodeling your kitchen can inspire new creative cooking styles and also motivate you to spend more time there with your family. A remodel, or an upgrade can start small and simple, or it can become a drastic overhaul of the room. Adding a backsplash can add color, depth, and originality to a kitchen. New sinks, faucets, and hardware will make washing dishes less of a task and more of a joy. Appliances are always a great place to start. Refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and ovens can overhaul the kitchen very easily. Replacing the cabinetry will definitely give the room an updated look and feel that guests will notice immediately, you can also gain more cupboard space by adding additional cabinets. With all the work involved in replacing cabinets, you might as well update the countertops. Granite countertops are my favorite addition to any room, there is something about the look and feel of granite that can warm up any room in the home, especially the kitchen. Granite countertops are not just for the kitchen though (read how to clean granite), consider using them in bathrooms and on fireplace mantles. If you decide to invest in granite countertops, you will want to be sure you preserve and protect the natural stone surface. Investing in a large wood cutting block will keep knives and pans from scuffing and marking up your granite surface. Large cutting boards can also become a centerpiece in the kitchen.
Vaulted Ceilings
This is another home improvement that may be a little more involved than some homeowners want to be. Many homes have the attic space to increase the ceiling height, and yet the renovation isn’t common. You should consider hiring a general contractor to come in and inspect the room you want modified to make sure there are not any low hanging support beams that may obstruct your ability to raise the ceiling, HVAC ductwork can also create issues, however, those can be raised and re-routed to accommodate the construction process.
Baseboards
This may seem like a petty upgrade, but updating your baseboards can make a huge difference in a home. You can start by giving the ones you have a fresh paint job, if you want to take it to the next level, consider replacing the existing ones with larger baseboards.
Update Your Flooring
Updating the flooring can be a major upgrade for any home. Marble, tile, wood, carpet, granite, and other natural stones can make a home’s interior flooring become a focal point of attention and a definite conversation piece. We are also seeing more homes that were built on concrete foundations, tear out the old flooring and stain the concrete. The concrete can be cut and stained to resemble tile and can be an affordable option for anyone looking for a kid-proof way to have beautiful floors throughout the house.
Open Floor Plan
This option is a little more involved but definitely can change the entire vibe of a home. If your home does not have an open floor plan, you will need to identify the walls in the home that can be removed without affecting the supporting structure. A general contractor can be hired to come into the home and evaluate the project before any walls are removed. An open floor plan creates a very modern look and is an appealing option for anyone looking for renovation ideas that really change the look and feel of a home’s interior.
The great thing about renovating or remodeling a home is that it can be done in incremental phases that don’t require complete move-outs. Having to move out of the home for construction can be a costly inconvenience for any family. Starting small and chipping away at each room is an affordable way to begin converting your home into your very own dream palace. Flooring can be replaced a room at a time, appliances upgraded individually, granite countertops installed in the bathrooms one month, then gin the kitchen 6 months later, and faucet hardware can be updated whenever the budget allows. What I’m trying to say here is don’t hesitate to jump in and start making changes this year, a few small updates can really change the look and feel of your homes interior and get you ready for some of the bigger changes to come.
