In a cruel twist of fate, Mimi the rabbit was born earless and sans one leg. If it weren’t for Rodajia Welch 22, the poor deaf and three-legged Mimi would lead a sad life. But his rabbit was fortunate and was adopted by Welch. “As soon as I saw Mimi I fell in love and couldn’t wait to take her home,” said Welch.
But that wasn’t the end of Mimi’s good fortune. Deciding that a sight of a rabbit without her signature years was too much to bear, Welch decided to make her some prosthetics. And not just any prosthetics, but crocheted ones.
“Deciding to make the ears all started with finding her a name – it obviously had to be ear-related. So while doing some research my boyfriend Josh came across Kemonomimi, which is a form of cosplay where the characters have animal ears,” Welch explains how crocheted years came to be. “It was perfect because she didn’t have any ears and she could be whatever she wanted to be.”
Obviously, crocheted years don’t do anything for Mimi’s hearing, but the aesthetic, and especially the cuteness factor, are not to be underestimated, although many would agree that Mimi didn’t really need help in that department. Mimi now has a collection of years, a pair for every occasion. Most of the ears Welch made for her are rabbit shaped, but recently Mimi’s owner decided to expand her collection and started creating a mouse or even flower shaped ears,
”She only wears the ears after I’ve just made them for pictures, or when she’s sitting with me,” said Welch, “She lets me put them on her but for safety reasons I don’t tie them in a knot so if she wanted to, she could just knock them off pretty easy.”
Welch adopted Mimi from her coworker in a non-profit in Sacramento that helps poor and low-income families deal with pets. She is also fostering Mimi’s mother and siblings until they are old enough to be returned to shelter.
