Even from a first glance, Scotland’s capital is a great sight to see with stunning architecture being overlooked by an ancient castle. Mixing both the old and the new, Edinburgh is definitely a must-visit location and the perfect place for a staycation in the UK. There is nowhere else quite like it, with quaint winding streets, lots of cosy cafes to watch the world go by and even a dormant volcano, you will be spoilt for choice for things to see and do.

With an abundance of choices, we have picked out some of our favourite things to do and see. And whether you’re renting a studio flat in Edinburgh, or having a day trip out, you’re sure to have a great trip. Find out more.

Things to do

Edinburgh Castle

An obvious one is Edinburgh Castle. Situated on top of Castle Rock and overlooking the wonders of the city, this needs to be on the top of your list when visiting Edinburgh. It is the home to many Scottish artefacts, like the Honours of Scotland and the oldest crown jewels in the entire UK! Take a walk around the stunning castle grounds, or  even take a guided tour or audio guide to understand in-depth the history of the impressive castle.

National Museum of Scotland

If history and learning is your thing, then you must take a visit to the National Museum of Scotland. As we all know, Scotland’s weather can be a little unpredictable, so if the heavens open, then escaping into the warmth of the museum may be a wise choice. Here you can spend the day discovering something new, from the catacombs of Egypt to modern-day technology and the wonders of nature.

Climb Arthur’s Seat

For a day when the sun is shining, or if you want to brave the cold, then Arthurs Seat provides spectacular views and a stunning adventure. This ancient volcano is 251 metres above sea level and provides a 360-degree view across the whole of the city. Why not pack a picnic and follow one of the many paths and trails to the top.

Edinburgh Dungeon

If you’re feeling brave, why not do something a little unusual and visit the Edinburgh Dungeon. For a thrill-seeking adventure, the dungeon may give you a fright whilst you learn about the gruesome history of the city and walk along the plague-ridden streets. With underground rides and live actors, you will be bound to have a spooktacular time.

Shopping

In Edinburgh, you can shop until you drop. From luxury designer stores to boutiques and high street stores, this is a fantastic place, catering for everyone no matter your style or budget. Take a walk along Princes Street, St James Quarter or George Street to find your new favourite outfit.

Camera obscura and world of illusions

Get ready to blow your mind with one of the coolest experiences in Edinburgh. Experience a range of interactive exhibits that take you on a journey and play tricks on your mind. Discover hands-on optical illusions, mirror mazes, vortex tunnels and Ames room. This is a great attraction for all the family to get involved with, no matter the weather.  A unique place of trickery, watch as your body forms into all shapes and sizes in distorting mirrors and the twin exhibition provides you with a new perspective on yourself. Fill your afternoon full of fun at this wonderful attraction in the heart of the city.

Where to eat

With such jam-packed days, you will have certainly worked up an appetite. In Edinburgh, no matter your palette or price, there will be a meal to satisfy everyone’s cravings.

With a 6-course tasting menu that changes depending on the seasons, each dish is fresh and local and will get your taste buds tingling. There is no menu in this beautiful restaurant, instead, you will be pleasantly surprised as each tasting dish is brought over to you.

Pickles

For something a little more relaxed, retreat to Pickles, the ideal place to chill out over a tasty bite and glass of wine. A warm and welcoming venue offering a great selection of Scottish cheeses and light nibbles to enjoy with friends and family.

The Pitt

If you can’t decide what to eat, then why not have it all? A street food market is the perfect excuse to try out a range of dishes and have a great time. The Pitt is home to award-winning food and Edinburgh-brewed craft beer. With the likes of buttermilk fried chicken, traditional Scottish food, steak fries, milkshakes and much more.

Mimi’s bakehouse

Do you have a sweet tooth? Well, you’ve come to the right place! This family-run bakery is such a delight, especially for those who love a sweet treat. From cupcakes, to scones and traybakes, your cravings will certainly be satisfied. Whether it’s breakfast or brunch you desire, Mimi’s bakehouse has got you covered. For a more savoury option, there are also many options such as bagels with a range of fillings or toast options, including french toast.

Arcade Bar: Haggis and Whiskey House

No trip to Scotland is complete without a taste of the traditional cuisine, haggis. Better yet, this place also offers some of the best whiskey, another Scottish speciality, making it the perfect combination to really get stuck into the true Scottish culture.

Milk

Over the past few years, Milk has built up a fantastic reputation. The cute cafe offers both healthy, delicious and affordable meal options from tasty breakfast sandwiches, to rosemary and mushroom burritos. The menu changes with the seasons, therefore you know that all produce is fresh and tasty. With seasonal and nutritious food, you can’t really go wrong, making this the perfect brunch spot to stop before setting off on your day ahead.

If that doesn’t sway you to take a trip to the capital of Scotland, I don’t know what will. Where will you choose to visit in Edinburgh?
