A common godparent is there to give you some advice, be your spiritual guidance and to be there while you grow up. But royal godparents have a more different role. Marlene Koenig, a royal expert, explained it to Town & Country, “Godparents are supposed to provide the spiritual guidance to their godchildren, at least for regular folk. But royal godparents have a different role –sometimes at a distance — sending a lovely present for their godchild’s birthday until adulthood – and a nice wedding present.”

Princess Diana and Prince Charles chose godparents for Prince William and Prince Charles people who were closer to the Queen and Prince Philip that to them. Kate Middleton and Prince William chose friends and only one family member to be a godparent to their children.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not Prince Louis’ godparents
The reason why they aren’t Prince Louis’ godparents is simply that they have already an important role in his life as his aunt and uncle. That means that Kate and Prince William will most likely not be godparents to baby Sussex.
