If you don’t want your show to end up on PornHub, don’t make it porn. It’s really as simple as that. According to BBC (The British Broadcasting Corporation, not the eh, porn term), HBO is taking action against Pornhub over breach of copyright and pulling Game of Thrones clips off the site. Pornhub is likely to put up a hell of fight since the “Game of Thrones” category (NFSW, clearly) is so popular, especially while the show is currently in season. Even non-porn sites like The Huffington Post and GQ have “best sex scenes” roundups for the show because sex –especially Game of Thrones sex – sells.
The amount of gratuitous nudity, sex, and rape is off the charts in this show, and it’s mostly degrading towards women which is a popular porn category indeed. Agreeing to nudity as an actress is one thing, but I wonder if these women knew they’d become their own category on porn sites. According to BBC,
“Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen (the Queen of Dragons), was the top search.”
The show makers issued this simple statement,
“HBO is aware of the issue and is in the process of getting material taken down from Pornhub.”
What I find most disturbing about the whole thing is that according to data released by Pornhub, one of the most popular scenes sought after is Cersei’s walk of shame.
“More specific searches include Walk of Shame, referring to a scene in which the character Cersei was forced to walk naked through the town…”
I’ve watched this scene, so to clarify, she not only walks through the town naked, but she is followed by a man who chants “shame” over and over again behind her and men in the streets throw shit at her and expose themselves to her.
Who the fuck is beating it to that? This show is a fantasy show! Why does it have to be grounded in such a sexist reality? It’s flat out lazy writing.
Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, has come to the show’s defense, insisting the the show is “feminist.” Which is a sweet notion, but simply not the case. They always refer to this one scene where Daenerys is the sexually dominate one in the equation, but it doesn’t make up for the oodles and oodles of scenes where women are treated like sexual objects, both lead roles and prostitute extras.
I found the show to be fun and engaging at first, but I’m exhausted by all of the distasteful sex. I’m not immune to sex or porn, but Game Of Thrones is certainly not my category of choice.
