How to Balance Overactive Root Chakra

Known as the Muladhara chakra (as it contains feminine energy), the root chakra is the first of seven chakras found at the base of our spines. It is known as the basis of our raw energy and our “fight, flight or flee” instincts. Therefore, horrible things happen when your root chakra is overactive. Consider it the center of our energy. When off-balanced, paranoia, aggression and flying off the handle are common characteristics. Because of this, our self-ability to believe in our self-confidence to handle life’s storms becomes damaged. We are weaker as a result. Here are several methods and principles for balancing your overactive root chakra.

1. Be Your Anchor

Your environment is a part of you. You are a part of your environment. It is crucial to feel safe in your environment and to foster safety. How do you feel in your home? How do you feel walking the streets of your neighborhood? Balancing your first chakra by feeling safe about where you are is key.

2. Journal

Journals are a practical tool for recording insights and observations as they happen. They’re also useful as a reminder of what to do, where to be, or for keeping revolutionary ideas. In your journal, write down the following questions and ask yourself:

  • What am I doing to meet my basic needs?
  • Who in my life is supporting me?
  • What are five things I am grateful for?

3. Pose

Yoga practice can help you realign your root chakra in spades. Movement is essential. Creating Happiness points out that there are four basic poses that are easy to perform. These are the Malasana, Janu Sirasansana, Padmasana, and Pavanamuktasana. (If English is your only language, don’t worry: these poses are easier to perform than pronounce.)

The Malasana (known as a squat) by squatting with your feet close together. Separate your thighs until they are wider than your torso. Exhale, leaning forward. Now, rest your elbows against your inner knees and bring your palms together. Remember to breathe comfortably and go as far as you are comfortable with. Hold for 45 seconds. Practice this pose throughout the day.

4. Earth Connection

No imbalance can be healed without a deep, rooted connection to the Earth. Walk on unpaved paths. Bury your hands into the soil. Plant seeds and start a garden. Walk into a forest and run your hands over the trunks of trees. You can also buy special crystals that vibrate with the energy of nature. Energy Muse claims that this will help your root chakra invite an energy flow that is more grounded and sustainable.

5. Declutter

Which room do you spend most of your time in? (Mine is the kitchen because I love preparing different meals – it helps that the table serves as my work desk.) Because our physical environment affects how we feel inside, purge the area you spend the most time in. Declutter your environment to declutter your mind.

6. Eat Root Chakra Foods

What we eat and digest is a part of who we are. Because red is the associated color with the root chakra, eating red foods will help you heal your root chakra. Because we’re concerned with the root chakra, it is important to eat foods that have roots: beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, etc.

Once your overactive root chakra has been taken care of, your course of action and decisions will be more balanced. Your individuality will be grounded, and you will know who you are as a human. Believe in the possibilities of a more rewarding, and deeply fulfilling life.
