How to Put On a Wig

You might not know this if you are first-time wig shopping, but when you receive the wig, it is already pre-styled and ready to wear. With just a few things to add, your new hair will be ready in just a few minutes.

Due to the various style types, a wig can be packed in a few ways in order to preserve the style.

It can be stored inside out when you first open the box, and this is done in order to preserve the airy appearance of the wig. Other packaging methods are tucked, folded, inside out, and upside down. Each method is designed to protect the style, whether the wig is folded a certain way, or placed on the side.

Now that you know the packaging methods, it is time to look at the item itself. Upon opening the box and examining the wig, the first thing you should do is to cup your hands inside it and shake it to loosen the fibers. This can be done with your fingers or a omb if it is styled in ringlet curls, and use a wig brush if it comes with a straight style. No matter what style you choose, make sure to never use a normal cone or regular brush. Always use styling tools that are designed for wigs, because using normal styling tools risks damaging it. After you are done shaking or brushing, your new hair is good to go.

Before you put on your human hair wig or normal one, you will need to do some work on your hair to prepare it. It is recommended to use wig liners for those with hair or with little to no hair, but there are ways to prepare even if you don’t want to use a wig liner. For short hair, simply brush it back away from your hair; for longer, pin it up with flat hairpins. If you have little to no hair, then using a liner is your best choice.

Now that your hair is all done, it’s time to put your wig on.

1. By using both of your hands, hold it by the nape where the label is, tilt your head slightly forward and put your wig on in a front to back motion
2. Like putting on a bathing cap, position the front of the wig above your eyebrows and slip the wig on
3. Slightly push the front of the wig back until it rests slightly below your natural hairline. Try to center the wig by positioning the ear tabs on both sides in front of your ears, never covering them. When it feels comfortable and nice, tuck in any stray hairs.

Lace Front Wigs

You will want to be extra precautious with lace front wig when fitting it on your head. You would want to be more careful with this one in order to avoid damaging the delicate, ultra-fine monofilament fabric at the front of the wig cap. Do this by placing the front of the wig above your eyebrows, avoid bending or folding at the front hairline, and once the cap has fully covered your head, avoid stretching the fabric at the front hairline once you make the final positioning of the cap.

Once you’ve got your new hair in place, you can use special styling tools and products, like wig sprays and mousse that you can use to get that perfect look.
