Prince William is always seen smiling in public. However, there are some people who claim that Prince William isn’t all that great as he seems when you meet him in person.
‘Controlling’ and ‘standoffish’
Royal experts and journalist who met Prince William shared their encounters with him. Reinventing the Royals is a documentary in which some of the correspondents were interviewed regarding Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first major public engagement in Australia in 2014, and their impressions of William weren’t good. A columnist for the Daily Telegraph Australia, Sarrah Le Marquand revealed how Prince William was “very standoffish.” “[He is] not quite the warm and fuzzy character that maybe some of the people lining up in the streets think he is,” she revealed. “For all of his easy-going façade, Prince William is obviously a very controlling character.”
Tim Ewart, an ITN royal correspondent shared his encounter during the visit, “These are the first people I’ve ever covered who will not speak to me at all. More than that, the people who represent them will brief me about their movements, about where I can go and where I stand, but they won’t tell me anything about what these people think.”
The reason
The documentary stated how the reason why Prince William’s “standoffish” demeanor toward media is due to the fact of how they treated his late mother, Princess Diana.
The media and the royal family haven’t always got along. They invaded their privacy several times, and the most tragic one is when they chased Princess Diana to her tragic death.
Still popular
Even though he might be the way that he is to the press sometimes, he is still the most popular member of the royal family. So popular, that, according to an Ipsos MORI poll made in 2018 Prince William surpassed his father as to who should be the future King of England. However, Prince Harry is a little above Prince William in the popular votes, with 87% of the vote contrasted to William’s 83%.
