For years it has been thought that the use of essential oils around our pets both dogs and cats is safe. People couldn’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t be like that – it is pleasant to us, so it should be to them as well, right? Well, while putting an essential oil diffuser, as a part of the aromatherapy in your house can be relaxing, it might be toxic to your cat.

The problem with cats is that their liver functions somewhat different to ours and liver of a dog, so cats cannot process some of the compounds that are found in essential oils, with phenols being the biggest problems. Phenol is a compound that is contained in certain drugs and medications as well, and a lot of essential oils have quite a bit of it. Lavender has also shown to improve mood and act as a natural relaxant. Along with that Vetiver and Bergamot oil are good for soothing traumas or lethargic behavior according to certain studies, while Chamomile oil is great for calming yourself and the cat. On the other hand, when correctly applied oils like Cedarwood and Marjoram can aid in keeping healthy fur and skin. Last, but not least is the effect Ginger oil can have on your cat. It is said that ginger can help in arthritis and joint pain, and even better digestion – so if given to your cat in small doses you can expect certain benefits. Of course, even with these essential oils safe for cats, it is important to check for certain allergic responses before and consult with a veterinarian.
