She wasn’t actually a princess
Despite the fact that she was always addressed as ‘Princess Diana’, she was not a princess. A princess comes from a royal family, and Diana wasn’t a member. Princesses by marriage are styled by their husband’s name after the title, for example, Princess Charles’. Diana’s title during her marriage was ‘Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales’, but after the divorce, she was simply ‘Diana, Princess of Wales.’
She wasn’t shy
When the world first heard about Lady Diana Spencer, the future wife of Prince Charles, the media quickly called her ‘Shy Di.’ One of Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretaries, Dickie Arbiter, shared with Vogue that the reason she kept her head low was that she was much taller than everybody else. Diana’s brother, Charles, 9th Earl of Spencer, agrees. ‘She was never shy,’ he shared with People.
Her nickname
Spencer also stated that Diana was never addressed as ‘Di’ during her life, but when the media called her that, everybody thought that was her nickname. She was called ‘Duch’ like in ‘duchess’ because her family said that she acted like one, so the nickname stayed with her even during her adulthood.
She wasn’t the first ‘People Princess’
Former Princess of Wales, Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821) was the Queen consort of Prince George IV. People loved her, but her husband didn’t, and that could be one of the reasons that she was the ‘People Princess’.
Not a common woman
Lady Diana Spencer was a member of the aristocracy, and she was related to Sarah, Duchess of York. ‘Though she was not born royal, her ancestors were ancient power-brokers,’ said Hilary Mantel, author of Wolf Hall and Royal commentator.
Not always honest
It seems like her confessions about her own infidelities, her fights with bulimia, and even her suicide attempts made us believe that Princess Diana was an extremely honest person, but apparently, that wasn’t the case. Biographer Sally Bedell Smith wrote that Diana’s friends not only tolerated but even made defenses for Diana. ‘She was under a lot of pressure,’ one of those friends reportedly revealed to Smith.
Not shy from paparazzi
When she wanted attention, she was the one to call the press and paparazzi for her own causes. There was one time when she was on a vacation with Dodi Al Fayed, she called paparazzi to take pictures of the two, all in order to make her ex-lover, Dr. Hasnat Khan jealous.
She didn’t think Charles would be loyal
Royal mistresses are something that was always a thing, and as BBC stated, Diana knew about Charles and Camilla well before her marriage ceremony.
She wasn’t shorter than Charles
In most of the pictures of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Diana seemed shorter than him. But, in reality, Diana and Charles are almost the same height when Diana is not wearing her shoes.
Not a Royal outsider
In 1991, Princess Diana wrote in a letter to Andrew Morton that she felt ‘extremely isolated’ and ‘continuously misunderstood’ by the Royal family. However, she didn’t say that she maintained a close relationship with Prince Philip, father of Prince Charles. In secret messages between Prince Philip and Diana, Philip reveals his shock and outrage over Charles’s treatment of Diana and at the end he wrote, ‘Fondest love, Pa.’
She wasn’t killed
Princess Diana lost her life after a tragic car accident on August 31, 1997, in a Paris tunnel. There were various conspiracy theories how Diana was actually killed on purpose, but the reality is that her driver was drunk and while trying to avoid the paparazzi, he crashed.
William and Harry didn’t want to walk behind her coffin
‘My mother had just died and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television,’ Harry said. ‘I don’t think any child should be asked to do that under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today.’
