More than twenty years have passed since the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, and each day, we find out more and more about what was her life like when she was alive. There are some unique and rare pictures of her, but what tells us more about the late princess are the recordings.
Diana: In Her Own Words was a documentary from National Geographic, and audios collected from a series of interviews in 1991, Princess Diana described her wedding day.
Princess Diana never thought about not going through with the wedding, but she said of her wedding day as ‘’the worst day of my life.’’
Tom Jennings, one of the producers of the documentary, shared with Today how he wanted to do a movie, created “from Diana’s point of view,” that told, “her truth at the time.” The negative thoughts about her marriage with Prince Charles began when they were just engaged.
“I went upstairs, had lunch with my sisters who were there, and I said, ‘I can’t marry him. I can’t do this. This is absolutely unbelievable,’” Princess Diana says in the documentary about her wedding. “And they were wonderful and said, ‘Well, bad luck, Duch. Your face is on the tea towel, so you’re too late to chicken out.’”
Prince Charles wasn’t too thrilled about marrying her either. Robert Jobson, a royal correspondent and author of Charles At Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes And Dreams spent 18 months with Prince Charles in order to collect enough material to create the biography. “I desperately wanted to get out of the wedding in 1981, when during the engagement I discovered just how awful the prospects were having had no chance whatsoever to get to know Diana beforehand,” Prince Charles shared with Jobson.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles married in 1981. After series of scandals, lies, and infidelities, they separated in 1992. The officially divorced on August 28, 1996. Princess Diana gave birth to two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
