You probably didn’t realize it, but according to astrologists, back in 2012, the Earth and its inhabitants began a powerful period of spiritual awakening, prophesied by the Mayans as a shift in our collective consciousness. According to one astrology website I found, “the essence is we are shifting from our current limited state, to a higher vibration and level of consciousness – a more spiritually evolved state, free from many of the individual and collective problems of our present existence.” Perhaps you’ve felt this shift in your own life as a gentle but noticeable yearning to connect with a power greater than your physical self, be it through organized religion, learning about your ancestors, practices like yoga and meditation, a sudden interest in death via the occult, or the traditions of nature-worshipping, goddess-centric religions like Paganism.
One place where this 2012 shift was apparent was on Instagram, where, amidst the selfies, latte foam art, and foodie pics, a new, decidedly gloomier, but still magical “trend” emerged — WITCHES. Modern day witches have adopted Instagram as their social network of choice, posting photos of crystals, spells, altars, tarot decks, graveyards and various oddities alongside musings on energy healing, goddess worship, communing with nature, and prioritizing art and spiritual abundance over money and traditional ideas of success. In honor of Witch Week, here are just some of the Witches of Instagram…
Contents
@thehoodwitch
The Hood Witch started her blog and associated Instagram as a sort of tribute to “the curanderas and the wise women in the neighborhood botanicas” who were “the beacons of light for their community.” She regularly posts photos of her flawlessly pointy manicured hands clutching precious stones, accompanied by information on the crystals energetic effects, and regularly reminds her followers about particularly impactful astrological events.
@isabeldunewitch
IsabelDuneWitch calls herself a “Dutch hedgewitch,” filling her feed with magical trinkets, altar displays, and advice for channeling abundance and prosperity.

In addition to showing off her beautiful gothic jewelry and incredible crystal collection — ;which you can then buy on Etsy — SacraLuna’s Instagram offers motivational mantras and blessings, as well as regular updates on her adorable cat, Miss Bailey Ann.

Alyssa is also the owner of Witch Worldwide, a fashion brand specializing in badass goth witchwear for whom she also models. Get it, witch.

@ancient_hearts
Calling herself a “green witch,” Ancient_Hearts is particularly drawn to earth magick, posting lovely photos in and around the forest in Germany where she lives. If you’re into looking at crystal clear photographs of dew droplets on spider webs and crazy looking poisonous mushrooms, follow her.
@parlourghosts
ParlourGhosts has a thing for those who reside in the spirit realm, filling her home with Victorian era portraits and musings on ghosts. I particularly enjoy the fact that she documents the many treasures she finds “whilst thrifting,” and regularly posts photos of cool-sounding books on the occult.
