Pornhub has proven definitively that consumption of “Fifty Shades of Grey” translates to real-life curiosity about BDSM, with a new sets of infographics on search terms immediately following the movie’s release last week. Shocker: A lot more people are searching for BDSM and BDSM-related terms than usual.
It’s women, in particular, who are suddenly way more interested in BDSM porn: Among women, searches for terms like “submission,” “dominate,” “BDSM,” and “spanking” are up 150-200 percent. Normally I’d be making some snide comment about the movie and book here, but I think that this is actually a good thing, because the difference between “Fifty Shades of Grey” and porn from Kink.com is so vast that maybe the people who are suddenly very curious about it will come to understand how poor a representation of BDSM “Fifty Shades of Grey” really is. And maybe some of them will find suspension and anal fisting and genital clamps and electroshock extremely arousing and look into safely giving it a try, and good for them; and maybe some of them will see that it’s well beyond their tolerance and will stay the hell away from it in their personal sex lives, and good for them, too.
Another bonus: BDSM porn is better-written and way more entertaining than “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Hey-oh, there’s the snideness. I may have a bottomless well of contempt for James’ horrorshow, but I also have a bottomless well of love for PornHub, provider of both really excellent BDSM porn and really fun infographics.
