When Princess Diana found out that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were having an affair, she faced her husband, and they ended up in a major fight. But what happened when she confronted Camilla?
How did Diana found out about the affair
“Someone in his office told me that my husband has had a bracelet made for her,” Diana shared with The Mirror. “I walked into this man’s office one day and I said, ‘Ooh, what’s in that parcel?’ And he said ‘Oh, you shouldn’t look at that’. So I opened it and there was the bracelet … I was devastated, and I said ‘Well, he’s going to give it to her tonight.” Camilla wore the bracelet after Diana and Charles got married. The bracelet is engraved with the letters G and F, which stand for Gladys and Fred, nicknames that Camilla and Charles gave each other.
Diana said that when she confronted Charles about the issue, he simply said, “I refuse to be the only Prince of Wales who never had a mistress.”
The Camilla confrontation
During Camilla’s sister’s 40th birthday party in 1989, Diana decided to come without any warning, and she had everything she wanted to say to Camilla in her mind. Princess Diana then interrupted Camilla, Charles, and another man, and asked if she could talk to Camilla. Diana said that Camilla looked “really uncomfortable and put her head down.” She remembered saying, “OK, boys, I’m just going to have a quick word with Camilla and I’ll be up in a minute.” The two men then “shot upstairs like chickens with no heads,” Diana said, continuing, “I could feel, upstairs, all hell breaking loose — ‘What is she going to do?’”
Diana confessed that she was “terrified” of Camilla, but stayed “deathly calm.” “The voice inside me had said, ‘just go for it,’” Diana explained. “I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.’” Camilla’s response was, “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?’”
“‘I want my husband’” Diana answered, “‘I’m sorry I’m in the way … and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.’” After the party, Diana admitted that Charles “was all over me like a bad rash, and I cried like I have never cried before.”
Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996. In 1997, Princess Diana died after a car crash. Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005, after her wedding with Prince Charles.
