Well, it’s the holidays, so that’s as good a time as any to break it to you that science thinks your cats are the ones who made you into BDSM.
Yes, while you cozy up to your chosen or blood-related family members this season, just know that a new study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology found that there’s a bug in the brains that makes your sex life what it is. In this case, that bug is “toxoplasma gondii” which causes toxoplasmosis. What is toxoplasmosis linked to, you ask? Why it’s related to your ability to become sexually aroused by fear, violence, or danger. Animals that transmit this do so by their feces, thereby making those who come into contact with it more likely to be aroused by their own terror, as well as having a “higher attraction to bondage, violence and, in men, to masochism and raping.”
CATS, GUYS!!!
Look, before you totally freak out about this because wow, what a study, just know that people contracting this parasite are relatively uncommon, with the Independent showing that only 350 cases were recorded by NHS officials in the most recent data. That’s really not that many, but it’s definitely not, like, “oh, it’s only two people” either.
Plus, I’ll say it again, cats are doing this, guys. Cats.
Still, it’s believed that as many as 350,000 people could still be transmitting it every single year without even knowing it, which is whoa, nope, can’t, no thanks.
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t address the cliche about lesbians who love cats (which is true, but also so do straight people and everyone in between so, come on guys), so whether or not that’s causing queer women to appreciate BDSM more because of that remains unknown.
Anyway, all that aside, if you’re super happily, joyously into BDSM and you also have cats, you may have them to thank for that.
