Prince George is the oldest child of parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William, and takes after his father, you could say he’s the spitting image of him. Another detail that make him similar to his father is the fact that he always wears shorts just like his father did as a child.

Bloomers and Shorts

Short pants, short trouser and bloomers are just basically synonyms for shorts. Whatever you might call them that’s what Prince George is wearing. It is thought he has quite the big collection of them.

In most cases you can see Prince George wearing shorts with sweaters, collared shirts or even knee socks when it’s a bit chilly outside. And to be honest Britain isn’t the perfect place for shorts all-year-round considering the weather, so why does he only wear shorts?

The short answer is tradition, that’s the way it has been done for centuries in the royal family. When boys were very young they would wear gowns just like their sisters would just until they become toddlers, that’s according to the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood. When the time came boys would be “breeched” and start wearing bloomers. This goes way back to the 1500s.

Wearing trousers is something of a rite of passage and means that the boys are growing up and becoming “men” so Prince George can start wearing pants when he’s close to the age of eight.

Ingrid Seward the Editor-in-Chief of Majesty magazine said that it’s shorts until you’re 8 and then suddenly you’re in long trousers and it gives them a feeling of being very grown up.

How soon will we see Prince George in pants?

So what would it take for Prince George to wear pants before the age of eight? Well nothing, we won’t be seeing him in pants before he turns 8.

Seward said that it is generally thought that a little boy wearing long trousers gives off a very suburban feeling, which isn’t appropriate.

When it comes to royalty and aristocracy, wearing shorts as a boy is a very important and longstanding tradition and it thought to be “very English”.

Of course Prince George isn’t going to wear shorts when the weather doesn’t call for it. He still wears pajama pants and even long pants when it gets particularly cold in Britain, but in most cases you will see him in shorts.

Prince William wore shots as well

Just like his son, Prince William live through the same tradition as a boy and so did his brother, Prince Harry. At one time you could see Prince George wearing red shorts and a white collared shirt with some red embroidery, which reminded everyone of something Prince William used to wear when he was a little boy. The whole outfit was probably to pay respect to his father’s outfit.

Prince William wore only shorts for quite a number of years before he started wearing pants. The first time Prince William wore pants was when he went to school a Ludgrove when he was 8 or 9.

Just like his dad, George might wear pants just before he goes to prep school, but not much before that.

Prince George likes red and blue

Prince George has been seen on a couple of occasions wearing a pair of red shorts. Now we know that the brand of those shorts is a Spanish one from Dona Carmen and were bought in Valladolid, Spain, as reported by TIME.

Another colour of shorts George can often be seen in is navy blue. Like in birthday portraits, a part of his school uniform and family portraits.
