Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had their royal wedding on May 19 of last year, in what was a lavish ceremony at St George’s Chapel. In the coming weeks, they will welcome their first child into the world. Baby Sussex will be the eight great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II. Now, although Meghan appears to have integrated more than well into the Royal Family, what does the Queen really think of the former actress?
If some reports are to be believed, Meghan refers to the Queen as “Mama” while they are among closest family and in private, which is a nickname that Princess Diana gave the longest-ruling UK monarch. Meghan and her mother were invited to spend Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham last year as well. Meghan considered this as a “mark of the Queen’s respect”, as sources confirmed.
In July of last year, the Queen and Meghan had their first solo engagement, and enjoyed each other’s company. This is a clear proof of a rapid strengthening of their important bond, as Kate Middleton did not attend a solo trip with the Queen until almost eight years passed after her wedding to Prince William.
Meghan and the Queen visited Chester, as the former aide of the Queen, Dickie Arbiter said, “The day itself was brilliant – the Queen and Meghan obviously have a tremendous rapport. I have never seen the Queen look so happy and delighted. She was smiling and laughing a lot.”
In a Channel 5 documentary called Harry and Meghan: The First 100 Days, the narrator said that instead of a “genuine grandmotherly love”, the Queen has a welcoming and friendly attitude to Meghan may, probably because of a “PR exercise by the Palace”.
The official royal author Katie Nicholl also expressed her opinion, had this to say:
“The Royal Family have come unstuck in the past because they have isolated Diana. They didn’t include her – they don’t go out their way to make her feel welcome. Is this why they are making such an effort with Meghan? I am sure the Queen, by bringing her in under her wing, supporting her, going out with her on a very public away-day, it sends out a great message.”
Despite all of this, on some fronts, it seems that their relationship might not be so great. After Women’s Day, it was reported that Harry and Meghan want to raise their child as a vegan. One royal insider reported how that, “The Queen won’t have it. It’s created tense discussions between Meghan and Harry, who doesn’t want to upset his grandmother. He’s hoping Meghan will settle once the baby comes and he’s putting this latest polarizing idea down to heightened emotions while being pregnant.”
