Learning a foreign language in the royal family is considered something standard and something everyone does. Including Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, Prince Charles and all the other members of the royal family they can speak around seven foreign languages. So which languages exactly can the royal family members speak? Let’s find out!
Royal family foreign languages
Is considered a part of education to learn to speak a foreign language for the royal family members. Some of the members even know more than one foreign language. For instance Prince William and Prince Charles are thought to be the best when it comes to linguistic skills in the royal family, between the two princes, they know around five foreign languages, but to be honest they aren’t fully fluent in all of them.
Royal parents, which includes Prince William and Kate Middleton, usually encourage foreign language when the children are young, which makes it easier in the long run to become fluent in those languages. The Duchess and Duke of Cambridge’s eldest kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte have already got started on their first foreign language.
French
French is thought to be one of the most spoken languages in the royal family circles. It seems like Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William and Prince Charles all speak French. Some other members who speak French are Prince Andrew, Kate Middleton, Prince Edward, Prince Philip and Princess Anne. There’s speculation that Meghan Markle too knows French, but it hasn’t yet been officially confirmed whether she really does or if she’s fluent in French.
German
German is probably the second language that would come to mind when you think about learning a European language as an English-speaking person and it’s a common language spoken in the royal family. Prince William and Prince Charles both speak German and that’s quite a feat since German is a quite a difficult language to learn to speak, especially when it comes to fluency. Prince Philip also speaks German, mostly because his whole family spoke three languages, which includes German, so that’s mostly the reason he can speak German fluently.
Spanish
When it comes to Spanish the youngest of the royals are learning to speak it. Prince Charlotte and Prince George are learning to speak Spanish right now. As extra help they brought in a Spanish-speaking nanny, who most likely makes to check up on their progress and maybe even practices some Spanish with them while taking care of them. In addition, Meghan Markle also knows Spanish, but she’s not fluent. The Duchess of Sussex had the chance to learn Spanish when she worked at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires.
Welsh
Prince Charles and Prince William, the first being a prince of Wales and the second a future Prince of Wales, know some Welsh. Although it’s not confirmed how fluent they are, but we can guess that they learned it as part of their job in the royal family.
Gaelic
It was reported that Prince William and Prince Charles can even speak Gaelic. We don’t really know how often they used it, probably mostly when to go to Scotland or Northern Ireland, but it’s an impressive feat all things considered.
Swahili
Prince William considers Africa a place very close to his heart. And him being able to speak some Swahili even further supports this claim. Swahili is spoken in quite a bit of African countries.
Russian
It is known that some family members can speak Russian too. Prince Michael of Kent and his lovely wife, Princess Michael can speak Russian, but it’s not confirmed.
Tagalog
Tagalog is the language of the Philippines and Meghan Markle may be able to speak it. When visiting Edinburg with her husband she was hear saying “Salamat Po” which when translated means “thank you”.
