Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson met as children. They became romantically involved when they met again in 1985, at a party at Floors Castle.
A royal columnist, Victoria Arbiter said:
„He was utterly charmed by her, she was like nothing the Royal Family had ever seen before. Fergie was funny, and boisterous and brash and she approached life with such a zest for life and enthusiasm and that in the beginning was utterly charming but ultimately, that led to her downfall. She and Prince Andrew fell in love very quickly.“
Princess Diana was Fergie’s good friend and fourth-cousin. At the time Fergie was 26 years old, she attended Royal Ascot as Diana’s guest. She met Prince Andrew there, and he offered her some chocolate. At first she didn’t want to take it, since she was on a diet at that time, but the prince was very persistent. Next year, they got engaged.
Prince Andrew loved Fergie’s red hair, so he picked out a ten diamonds around a Burmese ruby ring, to complement it. Fergie saw Princess Diana as her close person. She said:
„The Princess of Wales and I are extremely good friends and we naturally talk about lost of different subjects. We’re very, very good friends.“
In 1986, Prince Andrew and Fergie got married. They welcomed their first daughter, Princess Beatrice, in 1988, and second one, Princess Eugenie, in 1990. Unfortunately, in 1992, their marriage was on a thin ice, and they got separated same year. Their divorce was finalised in 1996, just few months before divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
The Duke and Duchess of York continue to attend Ascot together after all these years. They are still very close, and even live in the same house.
