Royal photographer Arthur Edwards shared the moment everyone realized that the marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana was over. Edwards was the royal photographer for 44 years, and when he was sent to Korea to photograph Diana and Charles on their journey, he saw how “miserable” Diana and Charles looked. He said how “no one was surprised” when the royal couple announced their divorce a month later. “It was only when we went to Korea, the last tour when you knew it was all over them because they couldn’t bear to be in each other’s company. It was so miserable,” said Edwards to Yahoo’s The Royal Box.
Edwards continued, “The tour was called the Glums’ tour, and that was so miserable. And a month later the Prime Minister announced in the House of Commons, and I suppose no one was then surprised, we watched them in Korea.” The Prime Minister at the time, John Major shared with the public in December 1992 that Diana and Charles are getting divorced.
When their marriage started to fall apart, the Queen sent them a letter in which she stated that they must get a divorce. And so they did, in 1996.
Edwards further explained how it all looked at the time. “There were signs earlier when we were in India when he went to kiss her at the polo match and she turned her head.’’ When Diana was photographed in front of the Taj Mahal on her tour in India in 1992, people noticed how she seemed “lonely.” They were wondering if Charles was leaving her alone on purpose. “Although everybody suspected it was Charles not wanting to be there. But we knew two weeks before that that he wasn’t going, we were told that. And we ran it in the paper. Charles was not going to be at the Taj Mahal because he was going off with some British businessman to Bangalore where there was going to be a lot of business contracts signed, and he was going to support them. So, he was never going there,” said Edwards.
Prince Charles had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles during his marriage with Princess Diana. Diana stated in a series of secret interviews, documented by Channel 4’s ‘Diana: In Her Own Words’, how she felt that there were ‘’three’’ people included in her marital life. Diana realized that Charles was having an affair with Camilla when they went on their honeymoon in 1981. He was wearing a pair of cufflinks with the letter C’s engraved on them.
Princess Diana passed away after a tragic car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
